Personal Statement

After consistently working in dead-end jobs until the age of 24, I stumbled upon an advert offering the opportunity to write football articles for a website, on a voluntary basis. Being an avid sports fan and still possessing a passion for writing that I developed in my school years, I contacted the editor of the online publication and shortly after I began writing opinion pieces.

After writing a few articles and getting some praise from the editor, my self-belief grew and I decided I would give it a shot and apply for university. I supplied some examples of my work and fortunately UCLan accepted me for their foundation course, which I completed before going on to study for my degree. I graduated in 2017 with a 2:1 in sports journalism.

Work Experience

Full Contact Contender, Bolton: content writer - March 2016 – present

I currently work for a local MMA promotion, producing post-fight reviews and material for the website and fight night programme. The work I produce isn’t strictly journalism; it falls somewhere in the middle of reporting and PR as not all the work I produce is unbiased. I am expected to write pieces that show the company in a positive light, although I do conduct interviews and write features, which form part of a typical journalist’s remit.

Voluntary work with UCLan: May 2016

I was selected from a large number of candidates to travel to the Azores to take part in a research trip to generate content for a book about sea turtles.

In order to gather as much information as possible, I interviewed marine biologists and gathered a substantial amount of inforntaion about marine pollution and the current threats to sea life.

After returning home from the 10 day trip, I produced two pieces of work for the book.. Examples can be viewed upon request.

GiveMeSport: Nov 2016 – March 2017

I wrote articles for renowned sports outlet GiveMeSport. You can view my work by logging onto the website and searching my name (Daz Rigby due to the fact I signed up through Facebook) or by Googling my name and the name of the site.

MMA Plus, London: Contributor/North West representative – December 2014 – March 2016

I wrote news articles and feature pieces for this magazine and web-based mixed martial arts publication, and I was also the company’s representative for the North West area covering regional live events.

Wigan Today & Lancashire Evening Post – Dec 2015 & April 2016

I completed a week at both of these regional publications, working on sport at Wigan Today and the news desk at the LEP. I had work published in the Wigan Evening Post, and some content was published onto the LEP website.

Wigan Athletic F.C: Work placement - May 2015

I went to work with my local football to gain some hands-on experience. Whilst there, I produced some pre-season material for the club’s website.

Springview Services – Oct 2007 – August 2012

I worked here for nearly 5 years, selling advertising space in a magazine to local businesses. I gained customer service skills in this role, as well as an understanding for the importance of working coherently in a team.

Throughout the time I spent here, consistently improved my sales skills and by the third year I was running a small team. I left to pursue my journalism studies at university.

Education

University of Central Lancashire, Preston 2013 - 2017

I entered onto a foundation course in 2012, subsequently completing my degree and earning a 2:1

Abraham Guest High School, Wigan - 1999-2004

1 A (English), 1 B (Maths), 5 C (Electronics, PE, RE, History, Science)

Hobbies and Interests

I enjoy writing my MMA articles and the added bonus is it allows me to travel to live events, which is one of my passions.

I am a big music fan, with an eclectic taste ranging from contemporary electronic music to 60s Rock.

I’m adventurous and enjoy travelling to different countries, experiencing alternative culture and cuisine.
