Perma-Pipe – Lebanon, TN (MFRI) 2015 – Present

Leading U.S. producer in the design and manufacture of complex piping systems for colleges and universities, municipalities and the oil and gas industry.

Human Resources / Safety Manager

Lead human resources and safety work at this manufacturing plant with approximately 130 employees producing products requiring extensive fabrication and specialized welding operations for high performance piping systems.

Improved the efficiency and effectiveness of plant staffing through a standardized system with improved control and coordination and real-time communication and tracking of goals and overall staffing performance.

Created and implemented an automated comprehensive attendance policy and tracking system that resulted in a reduction in absenteeism of approximately 15%.

Devised and installed an HR & Safety on-line information system for improved communication with ready access to policies and procedures, reports, forms and templates, etc.

Built the plants first strong safety mission statement and comprehensive safety program. Led on-going continuous improvement efforts, changing the facilities overall safety culture within 12 months.

Reduced 2016 OSHA frequency rate by 50% over prior year (22% YTD 2017), establishing new plant safety records in all key areas, also now making this facility eligible for work in a new market segment (Oil & Gas).

Created an on-line (paperless) Safety Incident Reporting System with real-time, automatic communication of safety incidents to selected individuals throughout the company via this special feature.

Designed and installed a facility-specific SDS (Safety Data Sheets) management system as a single information source with convenient direct links to documents, ease of use and a comprehensive search feature.

Perdue Farms – Gainesville, GA, and Bridgewater VA 2005-2014

One of three plants acquired specifically to expand the company’s presence in the “natural” products business segment with a variety of further-processed chicken products. Site consisted of two facilities with 240 associates.

Complex Human Resources Manager – Gainesville, GA (2013-2014)

Responsible for a four-person human resources team that included plant safety and all other human resource functions such as training and development, employee relations, wage and benefit administration, recruiting and legal compliance.

Devised a site-specific, internal job evaluation system for plant hourly positions to objectively, methodically and quantitatively access relative internal “value”. The resulting long-term plan for strategic wage adjustments contributed to a reduction in voluntary turnover of approximately 30% over a four-month period.

At the request of the V.P. of Human Resources, developed a new model and proposal for corrective action with a more progressive approach to serve as the foundation for a new policy to be implemented on a company-wide basis.

Assembled and utilized a special safety task force team to close OSHA compliance gaps and improve plant safety performance. Results was a 20% reduction in OSHA frequency rate and a new safety record.

Human Resources Manager – Bridgewater, VA (2005-2013)

Directed and led daily operations for five-person Human Resources / safety department at this major poultry processing plant (cook facility) with 680 associates, producing 500,000 lbs. / week of chicken products and 1.5 million pounds of finished turkey products for retail and food service customers.

Led efforts to reduce turnover and improve safety performance. Voluntary turnover reduced to lowest level ever (2nd lowest of 26 plants) and new plant record of 3 million hours worked without a lost-time accident

Developed and promoted a strategic approach to hourly pay adjustments with a return on investment focus in contrast to an “across-the-board” increase mentality, thereby improving internal pay equity and external pay competitiveness, particularly in the area of more skilled positions.

Envisioned and brought to fruition our operating philosophy – “The Bridgewater Way”. Developed a corresponding survey that was used to gauge current performance for subsequent improvement plans.

Created and produced HR Toolbox, an intra-company HR website, as a convenient and reliable information resource for supervisors and managers. Project was recognized and promoted as a company “best practice.”

Identified a progressive approach to safety (Safe Start). Made a proposal to senior management for our facility to be approved on a trial basis. Program / approach was later adopted at this facility.

Wise Foods – Bristol, VA and Spartanburg, SC 1998-2005

Regional producer / distributor of salty snacks with three manufacturing facilities and a sales area spanning the eastern seaboard to the Midwest.

Regional Human Resources Manager (2001-2005)

Led two manufacturing facilities (400 employees) for this regional snack food producer.

Wrote and standardized human resources and safety policies and procedures for both facilities, resulting in improved employee relations with greater consistency and predictability across operations.

Led a Kaizen project that improved efficiency and effectiveness of our truck loading operation with a minimum estimated time savings of approximately 1 hour / day.

Developed and conducted interactive training with supervisors and managers in lean manufacturing principles, preparing them for participation in lean projects, selecting team members, etc.

Human Resources Manager (1998-2001)

Human Resources Manager at 130 employee regional snack food producer facility, which was formerly a family-owned business well known and respected in the southwest VA area. (Moore’s Quality Snacks)

Managed benefit plan design and implementation. Partnered with consultant and Cigna representatives.

Designed and introduced an improved and more “user friendly” employee handbook.

Developed comprehensive OSHA-based safety audit program / process, which was adopted company-wide. Requested by the President of the company to conduct this audit at all other company facilities.
