With the enterprise-wide deployment of IHS Essential® for VoC and GHG reporting, the organization was moving towards analytical as well as regulatory reporting from Essential Suite. The challenges were:

a)Not all business units were deployed to and some were using shadow systems.

b)Variations among corporate, business units and regulatory reporting requirements created complications more so in the light of the above fact.

c)Some business units were using Essential as an ‘operational system’ while others were merely entering ‘pre-rolled up parameters’ into the tool and yet some were not using Essential® at all.

d)The reporting hierarchy was not ‘conformed’ (there was variation in roll-up of business units numbers for ESS, Business Units, Corporate HES and EPA

e)There was an all-together different system (different from ESS) for Green House Gas (GHG) monitoring and reporting.

With Southwest Airlines’ acquisition of AirTran, they were giving away some of the aircraft maintenance systems of their own and moving on to the ones that AirTran used (TRAX®). They were also upgrading to the newer versions of the systems. This created an extremely complex and challenging situation for Southwest to maneuver especially because the organization culturally been used to working in a decentralized mind set.
