Experience as Consultant Psychiatrist:

University of Liverpool -Honorary Senior Lecturer- 07/07/2014 – to date This is a full time post as a Chief Medical Officer for Addictions Services at Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust providing services to the city of Liverpool and the town of Sefton & Southport. I am responsible for inpatients detoxification unit, outpatient clinics and dual diagnosis. I provide support and clinical supervision to a multidisciplinary team. I am also involved in teaching undergraduate medical students and post graduate psychiatry trainees. I was part of strong team which recently won a £12.4 million bid (over four years) to deliver integrated community drug and alcohol services at Sefton & Southport. I am responsible to manage service with an annual budget of £7.3 million and manage more than 120 staff providing leadership for continuous improvement and delivering efficient evidence based services. I report back our performance to Liverpool and Sefton commissioners in quarterly meetings. My responsibilities further include managing primary care and secondary care community drug & alcohol services, inpatient detoxification unit (17 beds in total), supervision of consultant psychiatrists, psychiatry trainees, non medical prescriber nurses and team mangers. I have been directly involved in and supervised writing prescribing and management protocol for our services. I have led a thorough review of our clinical and service delivery model to maximise efficiency and deliver lean cost effective care. I have developed clinical models and devised protocols and pathways for our services. I introduced the SERTS (Stabilisation, Engagement & Recovery and Transfer & Shared Care) Pathway for the Liverpool community drug services which not only streamlined services further but also delivered addiction services in a lean manner ensuring minimal disruption patient care. I am involved in teaching and research with the University of Liverpool. I am working in close collaboration with Public Health England (PHE-UK) to increase awareness about prescription drug addiction locally and nationally. I have a keen interest in painkiller dependence have academic and clinical expertise in managing complex clients. My role includes working with stakeholders in the city such as public health commissioners and negotiating service delivery with them. I led a campaign in the city of Liverpool to commence the Take Home Naloxone programme and successfully launched it in September 2017. International experience: I have been the lead in setting up a new and innovative Mersey Care Global Initiative Program (M-GIP) which aims to look at Mersey Care s role in international provision of clinical services delivery, health systems management and teaching & training opportunities. I was responsible for launching a free six months mental health “virtual training program delivered by our trust to clinicians in Mogadishu, Somalia via direct face to face video link teaching. In October 2016, I was invited for five days by the Ministry of Health and Prevention, United Arab Emirates as a visiting Consultant. Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust 08/08/2011 – 09/05/2014 Consultant Psychiatrist in Addictions & Leeds Addiction Unit & University of Leeds- Honorary Senior Lecturer 08/08/2011 – 09/05/2014 This was a full time permanent post based at the addiction unit at Leeds, an established centre in addictions for tertiary referrals, research, teaching and training. I undertook the responsibilities of being the clinical lead for the mental illness (dual diagnosis) team and provided clinical supervision and support to a multi disciplinary team comprised of a junior doctor, senior clinical psychologist, community psychiatric nurses and community support workers. I was involved in outpatient clinics at our unit and liaison clinics at the local mental health inpatient unit. I took part in independent research and also taught at the BHSc (Hons) Addiction Studies degree as well as the Master s course for core psychiatry trainees run under the aegis of University of Leeds. Clinical Experience as a Higher Specialist Trainee: Substance Misuse Psychiatry (ST 6):

I was involved in taking the lead and setting up a drug dual diagnosis clinic within the addiction services in Barnsley. I reviewed new drug dependent clients weekly in a clinic and visited patients with alcohol related problems to assess them at their homes. I was responsible for independently reviewing inpatients during the weekly ward round at the addiction inpatient unit. Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team (ST 5):

My role was to do initial assessments, manage patients in the community, provide clinical support to the MDT, reviewing all patients on our caseload weekly, which in turn was supervised by the consultant. General Adult Psychiatry (ST 4):

Psychotherapy Experience:

I completed a 4 day motivational interviewing course at the Leeds Addiction Unit (LAU) in Feb- Mar 2011. We used this form of therapy regularly for our patients particularly at the initial assessment in Addictions Services I have conducted short term CBT for patients with OCD, Depressive disorders, Generalised anxiety and social anxiety disorders.

I have observed for a year fortnightly sessions of psychosexual psychotherapy at Porterbrook Psychosexual & Transgender Clinic, Sheffield. Management Experiences:

1. I am currently the Chief Medical Officer for Addictions services at Liverpool, Sefton and Southport which involves managing both inpatient and outpatient services and providing clinical leadership and strategic direction to improving services with innovative and lean ideas. My role involves working very close with the corporate division delivering the trust strategy of just culture and perfect care. During the past 2 years I have had the task to devise a business plan delivering a cost effective services in face of external reduction in funding. This involved developing new clinical models and pathways, encouraging staff and leading from the front and ensuring the service needs are met. I worked closely with finance and initiated a full service review that included cost benefit and social return on investment analysis, capacity and demand modeling, review of estates and developing a business model that would be resilient to future markets. Extensive budget planning and organisational change in collaboration with the finance and human resources department ensured that we met our deadlines and were able to deliver our services within the financial envelope. The quality of service is further evidenced through a recent Care Quality Commission inspection where addictions services were rated overall as Good We have also worked to explore innovative ways of income generation and have been able to secure extra funding for our Take Home Naloxone programme funded by Liverpool City Council, veterans detox programme funded by the Ministry of Defence, an innovative Hepatitis C project and inpatient beds bought by commissioners from outside our area. I am currently working with the Sefton Clinical Commissioning Group and the Pain Clinic at Walton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool to develop and integrated pathway for patients who have become addicted to painkillers which would includes elements of research and training as well. This charity was set up by a journalist who experienced painkiller addiction. 9. I was part of a team setting up a new alcohol liaison service in 2010 at Barnsley district general hospital. My role involved liaising with clinicians at the general hospital, presenting in their teaching sessions and in collaboration with the team manager and a senior alcohol nurse developing pathways of referral, initial assessment forms, prescribing protocols and information leaflets. I was the clinical supervisor of a research being conducted as part of a clinician s PhD programme. It was a study looking at individuals who have become dependent on over the counter medicines. The study is based at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. July 2014- September 2016.

I was supervising a core trainee s Msc dissertation titled “A Retrospective Outcomes Evaluation of Cannabis Use at an Addictions Centre.” The data collection, analysis and write up have been completed. The preliminary results have been published as a poster at National conferences across UK and the final results were published as a scientific paper in a peer reviewed journal. Feb 2012- Dec 2014

Teaching Experience

I have been appointed as an examiner by the General Medical Council, UK for the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) part 2 examinations. I have contributed directly to the curriculum development and examination papers for the European Diploma in Pain Medicine conducted by the European Pain Federation (EfiC). I was also an examiner for their exam conducted in April 2017 held at Madrid, Spain. I continue to be on their panel of examiners. We have set up a dynamic and innovative international e-learning training module delivered free of cost from Mersey Care NHS Trust to Habeb Mental Health Foundation in Mogadishu, Somalia. This included live lectures via web based audio/video link and using an online web tool to disseminate resources. This was within the remit of my role at M-GIP

I have been invited to speak on Opioid Analgesia Dependence by a variety of organizations and institutes all over England, Germany and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

I have arranged evening seminars on Opioid Analgesic Dependence for a wide variety of clinicians- first event took place in Manchester, 29th of January 2015. I am a certified International OPEN (Opioid Analgesic Dependence Education Nexus) Mentor which empowers me to provide leadership and guidance in the education of others on expert and experience-based best practice in the treatment of opioid analgesic dependence. I was the clinical supervisor for a pharmacy student pursuing a PhD from the University of York, UK. Her area of interest is appropriateness of psychotropic prescribing- Feb 2012- April 2014

I was one of the tutors for a level 2 dual diagnosis course based on the department of health dual diagnosis competency framework, delivered to 120 addiction workers at the city of Leeds commissioned by Local Authority- 2013 I was one of the tutors for the dual diagnosis module which is part of a graduate degree (BHSc) in addiction studies awarded by the University of Leeds. I also taught at the Masters in Clinical Psychiatry degree offered by the same University to the psychiatric trainees on our training rotation. August 2011 - to May 2014

Medico-legal & Court Reports:

As a Consultant Psychiatrist- I have been involved in preparing court reports for patients appearing in courts for family proceedings. I have expertise in the areas of addictions (drug or alcohol), anxiety disorders, psychosis, affective disorders and dependence on prescribed medications.

As a Psychiatric Trainee- I have prepared court reports under supervision for patients in Rampton High Secure and Wathwood Medium Secure Units. I have also prepared and presented numerous reports at Mental Health Review Tribunals.

Media Work:

Our services were highlight and I appeared on the BBC Newsnight programme in January 2017 to discuss about Take Home Naloxone.

I appeared live at Victoria Darbyshire show on BBC 2 in September 2016 to highlight issues around Painkiller dependence

I was interviewed by the BBC World service on 6th of October 2015 on our collaborative e-training work with Habeb Mental Health Foundation, Mogadishu, Somalia.

I was involved in a few radio interviews on 22nd of September 2015 when it was the first Opioid Painkiller Dependence awareness day

I have appeared on three Live TV shows (latest on 9/9/2015) arranged by Community Reach (Charity) and sponsored by North Manchester CCG on DM Digital TV (British Asian Channel- Sky 799) to target ethnic minority patients and increase awareness around mental health problems.

I have been invited to express my expert opinion on BBC Radio Five Live about the association of skunk and psychosis.

I have had letters published in UK national newspapers addressing issues around addictions.

I have also done a few radio interviews and programmes highlighting the hazards of addiction for a local Asian FM station in Leeds.

The Leeds Polypharmacy Clinic was covered by BBC News Look North on the 20th of December 2013; I had the opportunity to talk about this issue.

I have also talked about the issue of minimum unit pricing for alcohol at BBC Radio Leeds morning show.

Career Aims

The areas I am interested in include strategic organisational development, medical leadership, dual diagnosis and dependence on prescribed medication. I would like to be involved in psychiatry related print media work in the future as well.
