M.E Thesis:

Title: Design of Closed-loop Buck-boost Converter for LED Driver Circuit. Description: The main objective of this work is to develop power factor corrected (PFC) buck- boost converter for LED lighting applications. The proposed converter is designed to operate in discontinuous conduction mode In order to achieve high power factor (PF) and low total harmonic distortion (THD). In this work the load is modeled by twelve 3W white light LEDs were connected in series. Each LED was operated at 4V and 0.6A using ac 110V that was rectified by a bridge rectifier. It is operated in discontinuous buck-boost mode and the results are then simulated using MATLAB software. Further, Closed-loop is implanted by using digital platform in order to maintain the stable output voltage.

Ph.D Thesis

Title: Improved Driver Circuits for LED Lighting Applications Description: Globally one-fourth of electrical power contributes to lighting applications, which demand energy-saving and reliable lighting systems. Solid-state lighting technology is growing enormously due to its significant advantages like; high brightness, longevity, absence of toxic-gas, energy-efficient and compact size. Due to durability and energy efficient, LEDs are used in various applications such as household, street, transportation, indoor lighting systems, and LCD panels, etc. In view of this an energy efficient and long life lighting sources needs to be developed. We have proposed different converter configurations for single and multiple-load LED lighting application. Proposed configurations incorporate dimming control of each load simultaneous with high efficiency. Also, the aspects like high PF, low THDi, high efficiency, electrolytic capacitor elimination (E-caps), reduction in components count and simple control structure are taken into consideration.

Title: Development and characterization of JFET

Description: The development of power semiconductor devices has always been a driving force for power electronics systems. For a long time silicon-based power devices have dominated the power electronics and power system applications. As the needs and requirements for electric energy continuously grow nowadays, silicon (Si) devices are coming to face some fundamental limits in performance due to the inherent limitations of Si material properties, which make them incompetent for future demands, especially in high-voltage, high-efficiency, and high-power- density applications. SiC power transistors are great candidates for high-voltage power switching applications because of their lower on-resistance and faster switching speed compared with silicon power transistors. The transistors are used as switching device in power electronic circuits due to their high breakdown voltage and fast switching ability. The characteristics are the most basic evaluations of the performance of a power semiconductor device, which include the static characteristics and switching

(dynamic) characteristics. The static characteristics are the most fundamental evaluation of the performance of a power semiconductor device, which include the DC characteristics (current-voltage relationship, I-V) and AC characteristics (impedances). For switching characterization a double-pulse tester (DPT) was built to perform switching characteristics of SiC transistor and from the experimental results the turn-on, turn-off times and energy loss of a transistor is estimated.
