Autism Speaks, MI: 10,9

Advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

Student Volunteer

The organization, Autism Speaks brings together children and families that have Autism. I volunteered with the organization twice and both times I realized how much I loved working with children who have disabilities. The first time I volunteered was when I was a freshman and I taught swimming lessons for the children at Wyndgate Country Club located in Rochester MI. The children were very difficult to teach but I realized that these children were going through difficult challenges every day and this one challenge of teaching children with Autism how to swim was a challenge I would not back out of.

As a Sophomore I volunteered for the same program again but this time it was a walkathon for the children and families to help find a cure for the disability. I worked at a booth where I painted the faces. It was so great seeing how happy the children were after getting their face painted.
