CLASS PROJECTS
Failure Analysis and Redesign of Engine Mount Bracket - The front right engine mount bracket of a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt SS bolts the engine to the right side of the frame with 6 bolts. The Cobalt, experienced a front-end collision, and in the process, one of the bolt through holes on the bracket fractured and separated from the remainder of the part. This project analyzed the collision conditions in which this part failed and offered an alternative design to prevent this failure in the future.
Reactor Heat Exchanger Design – My team was tasked with designing and sizing a heat exchanger for a process stream of styrene that had to be heated before being fed to a reactor. A high-pressure steam line was used to heat the styrene stream.
Handicapped Bathroom Stall Door Redesign – Over the course of a full school year, my teammates and I interviewed and surveyed those in wheelchairs as to design something that would improve their quality of life. After much research, the team decided to redesign ADA Bathroom stall doors so that they could be pushed through easily and automatically swing closed with a magnetic latching system so that wheelchair users need not worry about trying to manipulate a cumbersome door.
AIDS Medication Refrigeration System - My group and I analyzed a hypothetical scenario to create an ice fabrication system using thermodynamic analysis and EES which would be used to refrigerate AIDS medication during transportation in the country of Mozambique.
Dynamic Study of Helicopter Harvesting - Constructed a displacement, velocity, and acceleration profile for a helicopter harvesting Christmas trees on a mountain. MATLAB was used to numerically integrate our solutions and plot the dynamics of the helicopter and the trees as a function of time.
Autonomous Robot Project - My partner and I designed and created a small track propelled robot that ran on an Arduino which we coded ourselves. Our robot placed fourth in the end of the year maze competition for 2015.
Oscillating Air Engine - My partner and I designed and created a small oscillating air engine using George Fox University's machine shop. It won first place in the air efficiency division for 2015.
