Teaching Experience

Principle investigator - a research study to evaluate accuracy of transcutaneous bilirubinometry (TcB) on 500 healthy neonates to test for neonatal jaundice. TcB will eliminate painful blood testing and result in significant cost savings and expedite the discharge process in MBA unit.

Created and initiated a discharge appointment time program to expedite patient discharges from the Mother Baby Unit, which has resulted in an impressive increase in the number of patients who are discharged within the discharge time goals (from 30% to 47% in two months, 2011). Resulted in increased patient satisfaction, and quicker transfers of patients from L&D to the Mother Baby Unit, which reduced waiting times for laboring mothers to be admitted into L&D.

Initiated and implemented the MBA Caring Science Committee. Present a wide range of group-interactive activities, teaching presentations, guest speakers, and numerous other activities. The committee is so popular that nurses have asked for more frequent meetings.

Revived the NKE (Nursing Knowledge Exchange) process in the MB department, which has resulted in improved exchange of patient information between nurses and 100% nurse participation in NKE.

Established the goal of 100% daily patient rounding by management to increase patient interaction with management team.

Led the MB Department in earning the Workplace Safety Awards for 50 weeks no injury in 2011.

Created a staff break/meal schedule for each shift to organize break/meal times, which eliminated the problem of multiple nurses off the floor simultaneously.

Created and initiated successful Mother Baby/L&D nurse shadowing program to increase nurses’ understanding of both departments’ unique roles and responsibilities. Resulted in improved communication between the MB and L&D staff, and was well received by administration and nurses.

Created and implemented a newborn screening workflow process to prevent PKU documentation errors/omissions and loss of PKU specimens.

Initiated & implemented a discharge medication process to decrease waiting times for medications and to expedite patient discharges.

Solved the hospital-wide circumcision tray shortage problem by developing a color-coding system to prevent loss of circumcision trays from the MB Department, NICU, and Newborn Club. Instructed the Sterile Processing Department to separate Gomco clamps from the circumcision trays so that circumcisions can be performed even if the trays are not available.
