Detailed Job Descriptions
The primary responsibility of the anesthesia nurse or technician is to assist and help the anesthesia physician in performing procedures of inducting and conducting anesthetic agent.
PRE-ANESTHESIA CARE:
Will receive the comprehensive endorsement full patient data according to DAFH and understand/ know the data regarding the patient from the unit nurse.
Will check the completeness of the patients file and the necessary documents: operation/ surgical consent forms, blood transfusion permits, pre-operative checklist, order for OR, order foe clipping, nurse internal transfer report.
Conducts a small interview with the patients regarding the following: last intake of food, any allergies, any artificial prosthesis, and any dentures.
Will take note of any precautions to be implemented/ initiated for the safety of the patient and medical personnel. To take into consideration the complete medical status of the patient.
To check and verify that the patient has not eaten or taken anything per oral for the last eight hours.
To prepare and administer preoperative medications as prescribed by the anesthesiologist.
To prepare the needs for the pre induction of anesthesia.
To assist the anesthesiologist in the pre induction of anesthesia.
To record and document the course of stay of the patient at the prep room.
INTRA-OPERATIVE ANETHESIA:
Assisting the anesthesiologist to check the anesthesia machines and to be documented before the start of induction of anesthesia agents.
To be present in the operating theatre to help and assist the anesthesia physician in preparing the needs for the induction of anesthesia agents
To know and recognize the component, complications and effects of the anesthetic agents that will administered to the patient.
To aid the anesthesia physician in doing proper connection of medical and ventilator tubes to the anesthesia machine and know implications to the patients.
To have the knowledge and background on proper use, care and maintenance of the different machines being used for anesthesia.
To be able to identify the problems that may arise before, during and after giving anesthesia and that to report immediately to the attending anesthesia physician so that the necessary precautions and treatment will be implemented.
To fulfill the duties and responsibilities with utmost care and to be the advocate for the patient at all time.
To be responsible in doing the after care of all the paraphernalia use to administer and induct anesthesia according to DAFH.
To record and document the course of anesthesia period in a legible hand writing.
To properly endorse the course of anesthesia to the PACU Nurse as well as to the ICU Nurse if the patient is for transfer to ICU.
POST ANESTHESIA CARE:
Receive the patient from the operating room and take note of the operation performed to initiate the normal procedure in assessing the complete post-operative status of the patient. Assessment will include the following: respiratory status, cardiovascular status, neurological status.
Promotes and maintain adequate and respiratory function by providing oxygen support through a nasal cannula/ face mask upon admission at PACU until the patient recovers from the effect of the anesthesia or upon the discretion of the anesthesiologist.
Check and observe for the absence and return of reflexes and monitor for the complications specific type of procedure performed.
Check the level of consciousness upon admission and from time to time and to orient the patient of his/her where about as soon as the patient cam comprehend.
Monitor and documents the patient vital signs and temperature and to report to the anesthesiologist any significant changes from the baseline vital signs. The monitoring system will aid the nurse in keeping around the clock vital signs data. However, the nurse has to do manual monitoring of vital signs from time to time so as to double check the data being obtained from the monitor system.
Check and maintains patent intravenous infusion.
Maintains a good renal function through an accurate fluid and electrolyte balance.
Facilitates the infusions of the blood or colloid upon the orders of the anesthesiologist.
Check for the patency of the drainage tubes and to record the output, its consistency and color.
Check that all drainage tubing is labeled and identified.
Check and ensure the patient safety by providing safety precautions such as bed side rails, body restraints only if necessary and upon the orders of the anesthesia physician.
Observes and maintain a good and proper body alignment for the patients comfort.
Checks and carry out any special orders made by the anesthesiologist. Any orders to be carried out should be within the scope of nursing practice.
Discharge the patient to the unit upon the request and order of the anesthesiologist and patient has meet the PACU discharge criteria.
Review/check all necessary documents are completed and fulfilled by the correct OR personnel.
Records the post patient in the PACU log book.
