ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
PRE-OP/ DESK NURSE
Receiving patients in the OR pre- op area with a calm and gentle attitude.
Validating all written documents including consent forms and investigations required.
Identifying and promptly responding to the needs of the patient and family.
Confirming the right patient, surgery and right site to avoid errors.
Providing emotional support to patients & families before the surgery.
Providing quality patient care by addressing the physical, emotional & spiritual needs.
Ensure that the patients have taken ordered medications and are in better mental status before the surgery.
SCRUB NURSE
Assembling all the necessary items and equipments needed for the surgery.
Performing surgical hand washing, gowning and gloving in a sterile manner.
Laying out the trolley, keeping ready the necessary instruments, sutures, blades and drapes.
Assisting the surgical team to carry out the surgery smoothly.
Maintaining/ ensuring sterile field throughout the surgery.
Anticipate the needs of the surgical team & assist in operative procedures.
Handling equipments such as all surgical instruments, drills and saws used in E. N. T. and ortho specialties, diathermy and bipolar cautery, CUSA devices, defibrillators, camera and light source, nerve stimulators, microscope, and all kinds of scopes like cystoscopes, ureteroscopes, laparoscopes, nephroscopes etc.

CIRCULATING NURSE

Confirming patient’s identity & providing comprehensive nursing care to the patient from the time of entry into the OR area till the patient is safely transferred onto the table.
Opening sterile instruments, blades, sutures and dressing materials.
Assisting in swab count, maintaining accurate count record.
Assisting all health care team members in maintenance of sterile field and efficient functioning of the OR.
Constantly ensuring safety of patient.
Receiving and sending specimen for laboratory testing.
Helps anesthetists during extubation.
Helps the patient’s transfer from OT table to stretcher.
Documents the surgery details in the computer.
The scrub nurse and circulating nurse work together in co-ordination to accomplish the tasks necessary to achieve the common goals in OR.
RECOVERY ROOM NURSE
Providing immediate post op comprehensive care of the patient including cardiac monitoring, maintaining ABC, level of consciousness, pain relief measures, checking adequate drainage from catheters, drains and tubes, care of invasive lines.
Administration of medicines, fluids, blood and blood components.
Prevention and management of post op complications with observation and assessment skills.
Effective communication of current patient status to the surgeon and anesthetists for implementation of adequate measures.
Efficient and well versed in handling various equipments such as cardiac monitors, ABG machines, defibrillators, central lines, arterial lines, infusion pumps, PCA pumps etc.
Once the patient is conscious, arrange transport of patient to their respective unit/ICCU.
