Formula Society of Automotive Engineers Experience (FSAE)

University of Texas at Arlington - Design Competition Dec 2015 – May 2017 Deputy Lead Mechanical Design Engineering Intern (Suspension/Vehicle Dynamics) UTA Racing

•Set up a Suspension Geometry in MSC ADAMS/CAR for 2017 FSAE Combustion Racecar for new 10 inch wheel package which was done for the first time in history of 35 years of UTA racing.

•Generating Rear suspension Template in MSC ADAMS for FSAE combustion racecar.

•Analysis and iterating the hard point’s points based on static simulations of Camber in roll, camber in heave etc.

•Fine tuning the points to get best compliance to the anticipated values by considering manufacturability, design complexity and packaging concerns in mind.

•Achieving near zero bump steer for the front suspension geometry.

•Basic calculations in MS EXCEL for yaw acceleration, yaw rate, moment of inertia etc. and comparing it with 2016’s FSAE racecar.

•Studying tire data that were going to be used and based on that deciding the decision to go for Ackermann or anti Ackermann type of steering geometry.

•Dynamic testing and tuning for 2016 and 2017 FSAE racecar on track by analyzing tire temperature, pressure and driver response and changing damper settings on studying the damper curves.

•Inputting Damper data, Spring rates in MSC ADAMS and performing dynamic simulations.

•Conducting full vehicle dynamic simulations like Constant radius cornering, ISO lane change, Acceleration.

•Utilizing MATLAB/Simulink for generating graphs for steady state cornering, understeer gradient and developing a quarter car model for suspension/vehicle dynamic analysis.

Lead Mechanical Design/ Manufacturing Engineering Intern

•Using Solid works creating a tentative 3D cad model for Uprights for clearance check.

•Responsible for conceptual design to production of all the suspension components, including, A-arms, Bell cranks, Tabs for mounting, Anti roll bars, steering column, inserts, bearing sleeves etc.

•Responsible for designing Jigs for manufacturing A-arms and Bell Cranks.

•Designing and FEA analysis using SolidWorks of Bell cranks and A-arms making sure they won’t fail under extreme scenarios.

•Designing and FEA analysis of Anti roll bar mounts.

•Chief Assembly Engineer for Suspension making sure that all the components are assembled in short amount of time and with precision.

•Assuring quality of the manufactured parts both in-house and sponsored manufacturers.

•Conducting DFMEA and PFMEA on the parts before and after manufacturing of it.

Associate Lead Mechanical Design Engineering Intern

•Determining proper Ackermann percentage required for 2017’s FSAE race car based on changes in steering geometry and lower wheelbase, also responsible for the simulations in MSC ADAMS/CAR for comparing TCD (Turning Circle Diameter) to that of 2016’s racecar.

ACADEMIC PROJECTS August 2015- May 2017

Static Tire Testing

•Testing of new Hoosier 10inch low profile tires on a Static test bench for vertical and lateral tire data using Liner potentiometer’s and MS excel to generate data curve’s.

•Testing was based on Wood’s tire model generating a curve fit and determining major parameter’s like slip angles, lateral stiffness, and change in Coefficient of Friction with respect to normal load etc.

Comparison of suspension characteristics of 2016 & 2017 racecars by simulating it in MSC ADAMS/CAR:

•Suspension geometries of both the racecars were made into MSC ADAMS/CAR and simulations were performed which compared major parameters of Camber in roll, toe in bump etc. and a formal report was prepared for the same.

Additive manufacturing of a suspension A-arm

•Using SolidWorks created a CAD model of a convention suspension a-arm and optimizing it by changing the layer thickness. Also conducted FEA analysis on SolidWorks and utilizing Makerbot to manufacture a prototype out of ABS.

Design and manufacture of 3D printed Robotic Fingers

•Designing Robotic fingers for Adept i600 cobra and 3D printing by conducting proper FEA and Interference check to lift Cylindrical object with varying diameter.
