Operator, Field, Mud Systems:
OXY/CA Resources 2 yrs
Elk Hills, CA: 12 hr 2nd and lead. LSND, Tannathin and SBM. Limited DrilPlex (MMO)
Challenges: Lost Circulation and CO2 contamination.
Kern River, CA: 24 hr. LSND and FloThru RDF. Shallow wells in depleted field. 50% of wells drilled with full losses.
Challenges: Extreme losses and frequent rig moves (spud-to-spud every 24-48 hrs) Developed SOP which was written into OXY drilling program due to high success rate in reducing losses and rig time.
Long Beach and THUMS Islands, CA: 24 hr. LSND, Tannathin and KCL FloPro RDF, limited use of CaCl DiPro (6 wells). Challenges: possible iron contamination from CaCl brine source, pilot-tested every batch before mixing.
SHP (Signal Hill Petroleum) 1 yr
Signal Hill Petroleum, CA: 24 hr. LSND, SBM, KCl FloPro. High-profile, Exploratory wells. Broke record depth for SHP. Challenges: HPHT
Chevron 2.5 yrs
Lost Hills, CA: 24 hr. Weighted LSND. Challenges: Fracture gradient near pore pressure. Broke time records by adjusting mud parameters and weight-up methods which became Chevron SOP.
McKittrick, CA: LSND and KCL FloPro. Challenges: Extreme surface losses, rig-move every 1.5 days. Time, inventory and sleep management.
Cymric, CA: 12 hr lead. Weighted LSND. Challenges: Blue clay, extreme losses possible and steam-induced pressure. KMW often exceeded pore pressure “Heal and kill”. Maintaining pinpoint MW. Developed W/U schedule using HW trucks, LCM maintenance plan and DrilZone / MD-C schedule that completely eliminated pack-off in blue clay. All of which became Chevron Cymric SOP.
San Ardo, CA: 12 hr lead. LSND and KCL FloPro RDF.
