Career Summary
Most recently worked at a consulting engineering firm in industrial, commercial and residential construction. Assembled “bid packages” for total site and partial site developments. Worked at two Titanium Dioxide solids handling manufacturing facilities. Equipment experience included rotating equipment, pumping systems, belt conveyors, bucket elevators, scrubbing systems, bag filter systems, solids disposal systems, etc. Facilitated design improvements to specific components to improve equipment reliability.
Team Leader for the “Management of Change” documentation system for the facility. Created the Flow Diagram for the implementation of the “Management of Change” in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910-119 “Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals”.
Utilized ASME, ASTM, API, OSHA and NFPA Code applications for commercial and industrial applications and Insurance Services Office (ISO) Methods for calculating Needed Fire Flow (NFF) requirements for structures to facilitate site utility demand requirements. Verified conformance with the applicable codes to maintain quality performance.
Edited and assembled industrial and commercial construction design bid documents for Owner directed project scopes. Worked with various engineering disciplines to complete these scopes. Performed hydraulic design calculations for water and firewater distribution systems, pump capacity requirements, and sewer system design, compressed air distribution systems capacity and component sizing for optimum performance.
My career has also included performing maintenance reliability engineering and coordinating capital projects construction.
Education
BS MAY 1981 NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. E.I. Registration #A6479. Elective classes were focused on higher level math courses. I put myself through college by obtaining grants, loans and performing work study jobs for funding tuition and other expenses associated with obtaining my degree.
Skills & Abilities
RELIABILITY ENGINEERING
Worked directly with the Maintenance Crews at Industrial facilities to enhance reliability and improve operations longevity of critical equipment. Worked with equipment Manufacturers to design upgrades for specific components to meet production needs and improve equipment reliability.
Served as team leader for the Process Safety Management Material Integrity and Management of Change in accordance with OSHA 29CFR 1910-119 “Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals”. Developed the process for making changes to materials of construction to enhance equipment reliability and avoid corrosion issues due to process fluid exposure.
Performed forensic evaluation of various systems failures to establish root cause of failure and remedy. Led team to research copper tubing failures in commercial buildings. Analysis utilized various testing procedures and revealed excessive quantities of chlorine present. The chlorine content was determined to be caused by the process of manufacturing. Shortly after this analysis, materials manufactured in this manner were no longer acceptable in the United States.
Management/Leadership
Operations Supervisor Reduction/Oxidation areas of a Titanium Dioxide Facility. Utilized all members of my team to identify areas for optimization of production processes and perform testing of proposed modifications to confirm throughput.
Coordinated construction contractors to provide project installation in accordance with the engineering design, construction schedule and budget.
Design lead for utility distribution systems for multiple site developments, include hydraulic calculations, pneumatic calculations and gravity flow design calculations.
Led investigative evaluations of sanitary sewer systems. Coordinated video line surveys to identify areas of restrictions and remediation. Liaison between Owner, Contractor and engineering disciplines.
Liaison between Condominium Home Owner’s Associations (HOA), General Contractor and Legal Advisors for remediation construction ordered as a result of court hearings. Provided and/or scheduled inspections to confirm remediation construction compliance with court rulings and engineering design.
Experience
SR. PROJECT MANAGER THOMPSON ENGINEERING, INC. OCTOBER 1996 – AUGUST 2016
Specialization in fire protection design utilizing modeling software and the applicable NFPA codes. Utilized ISO methods for calculating the Needed Fire Flow (NFF) for site developments.
Led design calculations of utility distribution systems (water, sewer, compressed air, firewater) for Industrial, Commercial and Manufacturing facilities such as Austal USA Phases I and II, AirBus Manufacturing Facility, Three Circles Church in Fairhope, AL, Olin Chemical, McNeal Specialty Products, Coflexip, Bredero Price. Edited and Assembled Bid Package Documents for construction.
Created Firewater distribution systems design to conform with the current NFPA Codes for Commercial and Industrial clients:
oAustal USA,
oChevron,
oHunt Oil Refinery,
oBP Oil,
oCamp Shelby, Fort McClellan, Alabama State Docks,
oVarious condominium complexes located in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, AL.
Construction Management – provided field engineering design modifications to resolve construction anomalies experienced during construction for the GulfQuest Maritime Museum, AirBus Manufacturing Facility, and Mobile Aerospace Engineering (MAE).
Legal Remediation Construction Management for multiple Condominium Complexes in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, AL. Buena Vista and Bay Shore Towers Condominiums required extensive renovations to conform to the applicable construction codes. Liaison between the Property Owner’s Associations, Legal Council and the General contractor.
Performed investigative analysis to determine:
oWater intrusion causes and recommend corrective actions
oMechanical systems upgrade to improve reliability
oDehumidification systems evaluation for optimization of systems
oVentilation systems evaluations to identify areas causing restrictions and establish design modifications required to optimize performance
oCooling tower modifications to increase capacity to meet production demands
KENDRICK CONSTRUCTION 1995 – 1996
CONSTRUCTION MANAGER
Generated construction drawings, obtained appropriate signatures for construction within Baldwin County, Alabama, coordinated material deliveries and sequencing for construction of approximately twenty new residential structures and renovations to existing properties to conform to applicable Building Codes. Designed and constructed three personal residences built in Baldwin County, Alabama.
Responsible for the prompt payment of all invoices to maintain construction schedules.
Used transit to determine site slopes and stake building corners, pulled strings at the floor elevation. Erected block perimeter foundations and interior columns, framing subfloor, walls and roof systems, installed asphalt shingle roof system, water proofing and insulation required to dry-in the structure.
Installed low voltage electrical circuits, plumbing, flooring materials, interior painting, scheduled sub-contractors for trades not personally provided (HVAC, sheetrock hanging/finishing, cabinet construction, carpet installation) and scheduled building inspections for the structures in accordance with the Inspection Department and applicable codes.
