How long have you known the candidate and what was your relationship to the candidate?
I first met Ollie about 15 years ago when he was working for SKF’s North Charleston manufacturing facility as the Operator Driven Reliability (ODR) facilitator. Ollie supported the local Charleston facility as they deployed ODR (SKF’s TPM program) and I supported the North American SKF facilities with this deployment. As time wore on, SKF’s ODR deployment grew into Manufacturing Excellence (ME) - SKF’s lean manufacturing initiative. Manufacturing Excellence grew into Business Excellence to deploy lean ideals throughout all of SKF’s processes, both manufacturing and transactional. It was my responsibilities to train, mentor and coach the local ODR / ME facilitators, as Ollie. It was Ollie’s responsibility to train, support, mentor and coach the local employees and management during these lean deployments.
About 10 years ago, I advanced to a global position within SKF and recommended Ollie to fill the position that I left vacant as the regional No. American Manufacturing Excellence Engineer. After a through multi-step interview process, Ollie was awarded the position. I continued to support, mentor and train Ollie, as needed.
What were his/her main duties?
In both of Ollie’s positions as the local ODR/ME facilitator and the regional No. American Manufacturing Excellence Engineer, Ollie was responsible to train, support, mentor and coach both the management level and blue collar employees throughout the lean deployments. Ollie presented many training classes on the various lean components/subjects; he facilitated many improvement and problem solving meetings. He worked hand in hand with the operators on the shop floor to implement lean. Ollie worked with and coached the various levels of management to adapt to and drive the change.
What were his/her strengths?
The positions that Ollie has held within SKF required him to work independently, often with an overseas manager. Ollie is a self-started who is capable of developing a plan, specific to a given situation and then working with others to carry it out. He will share his ideas with others and listen to their inputs to gain an agreed upon path to follow.
Ollie is open to others’ ideas and is very good at gaining “buy-in”. He can motivate the team to work through the challenges and celebrates their successes.
Ollie is not afraid of hard work and is always ready to assist any where needed.
What were his/her areas of improvement?
Ollie improved many of his skills throughout the time that I have known him. Perhaps, the most improved is his ability to look at a situation and after some assessments, he can determine what is needed to improve it.
How would you describe his/her people skills?
One of Ollie’s strengthens is his people skills. He has the unique ability to connect with people and understand the reality. Ollie has worked with many multi-functional teams to improve situations, solve problems and / or develop a new process. Ollie can motivate people to use their skills the highest level and given recognition where due. He is great at inspiring both individuals and teams alike. Ollie was always highly regarded by everyone that worked with him.
How would you describe his/her technical skills?
Ollie’s previous experience as a machine operator gives him useful machining knowledge and empathy for those working on the shop floor. Through SKF’s extensive training program Ollie has gained technical knowledge on lean manufacturing, ODR/TPM, people skills and managerial skills. Throughout his time at SKF, Ollie attended an intense 4-week Manufacturing Excellence Boot Camp Training course, among others.
His/her reason for leaving?
SKF is going through a global re-organization and is reducing its workforce worldwide. Ollie was part of this reduction.
Would you hire this person again if it were your decision?
Absolutely!
