As a qualified pipefitter, I have twenty-six years of experience as a pipefitter in both the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and the commercial contractor side in the pipefitting field. As a pipefitter I have worked on nuclear submarines, non- nuclear submarines, nuclear surface crafts, assault crafts, two man submarines, super tankers, ferries, air craft carriers, cruise ships, and tankers. I have performed QA inspections, QA oversights, sea trials, as well as installed, modified, removed, repaired, certified, bend, sketched, burned, welded, brazed, and tested piping systems and components for the U.S. Navy Fleet and maritime. These systems include but are not limited to; main and auxiliary sea water, main and auxiliary steam, high and low pressure steam drains, SSTG’s, thin line, hotel steam, catapults, feed water, condensate, shaft seal, fuel oil, JP-5, lube oil, diesel, fresh water, halon, AFFF, low and high pressure air, breathing air, trim and drain high and low pressure blow and etc. The required skills consisted of detailed cutting and fitting up of various types of mechanical joints. I also drafted sketches, devised piping runs, designed piping runs and performed cuts for fit-ups as per configurations as specified by drawings and existing ship layouts and ship-offs.
My skills, knowledge and experiences have enabled me to mentor and provide leadership to helpers, apprentices, sailors and other mechanics. To maintain approved performance as per procedures in performing this trade.
As a Supervisor for L-3 Communications I have been called upon to schedule, allocate, problem solve, supervised ten persons and ensure the work performed on naval vessels. I have executed ship checks for safety and job readiness before assigning tasks to mechanics. I have administered in inter-active pre job briefings, pre shift briefing, purchased material and planned with the mechanics and formulated all aspects of the jobs to include but not limited to safety, danger tagged components in the area of work past problems and remedies. I verified that mechanics were qualified and that they had the required work experienced or training necessary to complete the job.
During my twenty-six years of experience of preparing to test, inspect, testing and restoring from testing I have used procedures and drawings to select appropriate sizes, pressure ratted fittings, hoses and pumps for high pressure sub-safe testing as well as nuclear testing . I’ve coordinated completion of work reviews, certified, and certification processes which assisted shops and codes to ensure that the tests were prioritized so that all trades were ready when there portion of the test required their presence.
I have planned work from technical documents such as Procedures, TGI’s and also originated DR’s and DL’s that identified and advised of infractions of deficient conditions to Engineers which reduced work delay and rework. Waf’s and REC’s have also been used to perform jobs safely, effectively and within technical requirements and specifications.
As a mentor to apprentices and others I’ve stressed the use of the proper tool for the assigned job. This knowledge has increased productivity and decreased rework which has resulted in jobs well done. I strive to maintain quality, safety and maximum productions while conforming to shop and ship requirements.
