FEMA –1467 4/03 – 12/03

DAE, Project Officer

1) Hired by Theo Joseph as a local hire 4/03, Trained in a group of 12 (FEMA was trying something different with a training class to become DAE’s) in NYS’s Emergency Management bunker, for several weeks, Then we were assigned to work with Jose Landron at the Albany County Emergency Management Office in Cohoes NY. For DR 3184. We then got finger printed and filed our paper work to become a DAE.

While with Jose I went to many applicants, and their county management offices, and assisted in their applications, Jose taught us how to do all the work expected of a DAE, document snow removal, use of plows, rock salt, sand etc.

2) I received my DAE in late June of 2003. I was assigned to Disaster 1467 Ice Storm, the JFO was in Syracuse NY. I was assigned to Neil Wiley, we went to Orleans and Genesee counties emergency management offices. We documented the brush and tree removal, chipping, rock salt & sand, equipment time and overtime. I processed most of the Orleans projects with the assistance of a NYS PAL. I assisted another DAE in Genesee County. I did this until approximately Early August. The I was extended to work with Jose Landron To close out Genesee, Wayne, and Monroe counties. The JFO was closed out. We worked until late August, then turned in our equipment at Albany NY.

3)Called and activated on September 8, 2003 told to report to new JFO in Syracuse for Disaster 1486 to Aletha Mudd, she assigned me to Neil Wiley we were assigned Columbia County for the thunder storm and flooding, we were extended into the power outage 3186. From Columbia County down to Westchester County.

I performed all the duties of a DAE, attended the NYS meeting for the counties, took GPS readings, pictures, met with applicants and County Emergency Management staff, worked with a NYS PAL. Documented and checked repairs, culverts, tree removal, chipping, staffing and equipment use, fire house shelters, police OT, mileage.

4)For The 3186 Power Outage the counties were the applicants and compiled the individual agencies paperwork. We checked them and created the county coversheets. This involved mostly police and fire departments overtime, equipment use and emergency shelters.

I was discharged in Syracuse on 12/03/03.
