Resume:

To whom it may concern,

My name is Kenton Newby and I'm a software engineer from Atlanta, GA. I have 8 years of experience as a software developer, most of that time spent building web apps using Ruby on Rails. I also have experience building applications using various services offered by Amazon AWS including Redshift, DynamoDB, S3, EC2, VPC and Lambda (using Node.js). I have plenty of experience working remotely, while supporting teams ranging from small e-commerce stores, to larger learning management systems, and even a large insurance company. I'm comfortable working as part of an internal development team or in a client-facing capacity, and have experience with both.

Here are a few projects I've worked on that I'm most enthusiastic about: 1. SmartDollar.com - I was 1 of 2 original contract developers responsible for building the minimum viable product (MVP) version of this online training portal, which is one of the digital products offered by personal finance expert, Dave Ramsey. This is a Ruby on Rails application that includes a learning management system (LMS), engagement tracking functionality and reporting, among other features. Responsible for building the application from inception to ongoing feature additions and bug fixes until they built a permanent, in-house team.

2. Spinach Marketing - This project was for a marketing company that collects usage data from various retail stores to determine which product displays customers interact with the most. They have sensors placed in dozens of retail stores and were aggregating that data manually using a combination of Microsoft Access and Excel. I architected and lead the implementation of a custom web solution that served as an admin interface for managing their deployed hardware as well as an API endpoint for their sensor messages. As sensor messages were received, the app processed that data into a more readily usable format, then pushed that data to Amazon S3 and triggered ingestion of that data from S3 into Amazon Redshift. This saved the clients 4 hours per day compared to their manual process and set them up for successfully scaling from dozens to hundreds of stores moving forward.

3. TeeShirtPalace.com - This project was a migration of an existing e-commerce store into SpreeCommerce, which is an e-commerce package built using Ruby on Rails. Most of my work on this project involved working with the client to import their existing catalog into a format that matched Spree's data model. The client had thousands of images that could be printed on various garments. I built a system that allowed them to provide us with a CSV of which garments/colors/sizes/etc should be excluded for a given design. Then, the code I wrote would create the necessary products / variants in the database and also overlay those designs on top of a blank image of the garment, in order to create an image that could be displayed on the site for each item. This saved the client weeks of time and avoided them having to do manually create each image and add each product to the new store.

4. Insurance Company - The client for this project is confidential as they had me sign an NDA, but they are a well-known insurance company that you've certainly heard of. My work on this project involved being part of a team responsible for updating an existing ETL system that combines claim information with data from a variety of other sources. This information is aggregated into a proprietary tool for purposes of helping the client identify possible instances of insurance fraud or other unusual activity that needs to be brought to the attention of an investigator for further review. In addition to the legacy ETL system, I also did development work on an upgraded ETL tool that would offer greater flexibility and be easier to maintain. Looking forward to speaking with you soon,

Kenton Newby
