Linked lung microbiome to environmental exposures in Malawi

Role of Principal investigator:

Established international partnership with a research institution overseas.

Design study and obtained IRB approval

Completed regulatory review for study to be completed in Malawi

Designed patient information sheet and consent form

Initiated and completed recruitment of 28 subjects

Trained Malawian personnel involved in data collection including field work, nurse, bronchoscopy staff, and lab technician.

Personally taught collection of participants’ home environmental samples including air, water, and soil.

Personally taught ollection of participants’ compartment samples including stool, skin, oral, nose, and bronchoalveolar lavage.

Performed BAL’s on patients with appropriate controls for upper airway.

Designed experiment using flow-cytometer for cytokine and chemokine analysis using participants’ serum.

Extracted DNA using Qiagen kits on all environmental and human samples.

Learned the statistical and analytical methods used for bioinformatic analysis of microbiome.
