Mechanical Tool Design Engineering

Joined when Masland Industries who was a Tier 1 supplier of automotive interior thermoformed textile products as the start of my professional career accepting a position as a Mechanical Tool Design Engineer. Primary responsibilities in this role are outlined below. Lear Corporation acquired Masland near the transition of my career to Harley-Davidson in 1996 and the Carlisle site was later closed.

Direct interface with Design and Trim Engineering groups on product design to define the required tooling to produce product and volumes at the various global locations suited for specific processes and equipment.

Involvement through all prototype and product development phases to determine process and design data for production tooling design.

Designed chilled water cooled thermoforming molds with internal trim capabilities during the mold cycle involving serrated blades or bypass trimming by means of pneumatic and/or air over oil hydraulic design systems and controls built in and interfaced with press equipment.

Responsible for design of all secondary operations and equipment including but not limited to: inspection gages, attachment fixtures, dielectric processes, specialty machine designs for products such as deck panels, back panels, trunk liners, etc.

Worked in conjunction with Milliken-Sommer Process Engineers in Greenville, SC to design a BMW trunk liner two station thermoforming mold with an internal pneumatic bypass trim system to split the liners in the molding cycle.
