RE: #483440000 Social Worker – Veterans’ Justice Outreach Specialist in Colorado Springs, CO

TO: Whom It May Concern:

I have been in the field of Social Work since I was 15 yo. I volunteered for two summers to work at Teen Haven in Philadelphia with inner city children. This was from 1965 through 1966 and it opened my eyes to social injustice. Segregation was still enforced and they had separate drinking fountains for whites and African Americans. There was a red line in the busses too and coming from rural Mechanicsburg I was shocked by this. I went to Grace Bible College at age 17 and volunteered every summer to work at Grace Youth Camp in Mears, MI until I graduated in 1972.

My next job took me to a small (120 students) live-in high school, Sunshine Bible Academy in Miller, SD for the 1972-73 school year to work with farm kids teaching Bible, PE, and being the dorm counselor. I have volunteered for swimming lessons through the Red Cross from the age of 12 and throughout working at Grace Youth Camp seeing the need to teach every child that wanted to learn, how to swim.

I married my current husband in 1977 and have worked in many genres of social work: Council on the Aging, Community Mental Health, Domestic Violence, Bethany Christian Services as a homeless and runaway director, foster parents for 32 children involved in the courts: adopting 5 of these children, Michigan Home Health Care as a medical Social Worker, a Hospice social worker, school social worker for 10 years and finally as a small business owner with two other therapist, a drug counselor, and an acupuncturist in my current business.

I started my counseling business in 2009 and volunteered for Give an Hour for free counseling to any veteran or current military person or their family. I have attended several VA conferences in Traverse City and Grand Rapids and taken the online courses for GAH volunteers on military ranks and protocol.

I have specialized in CBT (cognitive behavior theory) and Trauma Focused CBT at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo which was a 2 year program taking place on campus at the Child Abuse Advocacy Center getting to watch the experts in the field behind a one way mirror work with families and children: they had a neurologist, psychologist, social worker, OT, PT, and speech therapist assess each child within a 6 hour day which was invaluable to a clinical therapist.

I feel I could handle the position at the VA. I have testified in 5 different counties in MI as an expert witness and took the local county jail program so I could see inmates in the jails: many of these cases were done pro bono to contribute to our community since many inmates lose their health insurance if they are incarcerated for longer than 90 days.

I would be happy to answer any questions and could start working as of February 1st, 2018. Please feel free to call me on my home phone and there is a two hour time difference. I am usually working from 8am to 6 pm EST so the best time to call would be noon (10 am MST) or 4 pm to 6 pm your time.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Linda F. Koch, LMSW, PhD
