ACLARA – Solon OH 2015 – October 2017

Leading provider of Automated Meter Reading Systems for water, natural gas, and electric utilities. Company is also a major supplier of Smart Electric Meters. Annual sales revenue is $900M per year.

Project Manager

Led and managed the development of new products from project initiation to manufacturing release using Toll Gate process to manage execution. Create work breakdown structures, budgets, schedules, resource allocation, and risk management plans. Manage cross-functional teams across multiple geographic locations.

Delivered a custom engineered system to SoCal Gas. This system allows methane levels to be monitored in a gas storage field. The methane levels are transmitted back to a central server. The system was delivered on time and on budget.

Completed the release of the Series 4000 Meter Transmission Unit (MTU). The MTU reads data from gas instruments and transmit the data to a central server. The release was completed on time to meet customer delivery commitments.

Led and managed the development of new products and engineered systems from project initiation to manufacturing release. Responsible for managing relationships between Laird and external suppliers when integrating third party equipment into Laird systems. Managed cross-functional teams across multiple geographic locations. Worked with sales and product management to manage customer relationships when delivering engineered solutions.

Initiated the development of new products using critical path management and a stage gate process. Created work breakdown structures, budgets, schedules, resource allocation, and risk management plans. Managed cross-functional teams across multiple geographic locations to deliver the products.

Assigned to improve the performance of the transponder reader used to determine the position of a remote locomotive in a switching yard. Developed solutions that greatly reduced the field faults. Used statistical analysis to demonstrate to the customer that the proposed solution resolved the problem. Improved system resulted in customer cost savings due to reduced down time.

Led the team that integrated the Laird Remote Control Locomotive system with a Wabtec Inc. FastBrake electronic train braking system. Assumed role of lead project manager to coordinate efforts between Laird and Wabtec. Efforts resulted in a $5.6 M order.

Delivered a custom engineered system to the Boeing Company. The system allows a crane operator to control multiple cranes using a single control unit. Delivered firmware upgrade ahead of schedule. Used 3D printing techniques to deliver a modified operator control unit in 10 days. Project is part of an effort to win a $3M order from Boeing.

Supplier of turbo-machinery equipment used in oil and gas, refining, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), petrochemical and other process and power applications with sales of $500+M.

Project Leader – Controls Engineering

Performed system engineering and project management tasks to facilitate the design and manufacture of automation systems used to control turbines, compressors, and turbine-generator systems manufactured by the Elliott Group.

Developed processes creating greater efficiency for project execution with suppliers; enhanced efficiencies helped to successfully complete outsourced contracts in China.

Delivered seven systems worth up to $2.5M in China and six systems worth $6M in Brazil by analyzing specifications, developing documentation, defining scope of supply, system connections and operations. Partnered with marketing to develop product requirements.

Managed the development of a high-volume production line for gas transmitters; product manufacture utilized Six Sigma methods to assure best product design.

Appointed as project lead to design and develop extended range antenna that allowed reliable meter reading transmissions from meter pits; project was completed on schedule and on budget and enabled timely product delivery to meet fiscal year sales goals.

Commercialized FixNet, a Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) transmitter for water and gas meter reading operating on the Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) band. First system of its kind for company. Led total project team, developed and launched full project on time which enabled company to meet sales goals for the fiscal year.

Managed outcome of multi-disciplinary team for project which commercialized FlexNet automated meter reading system which operates on narrow band license frequency and is current meter reading transmission standard.

Developed the FlexNet cost reduced version of gas transmitter with $3.0M per year ongoing cost savings. Development and the manufacturing launch were completed on time.

Principal Engineer (Project Management, Team Leadership, System Design)

Led and managed Physical Security Division electronic / software group which consisted of a team of seven engineers, designers and technicians. The group was tasked with the design and development of all electromechanical, electronic, and firmware components. Facilitated the introduction of Object Oriented Design (OOD) practices and testing techniques that increased software quality and greatly minimized the number of problems detected in the field.

Conceptualized the design, managed the supplier, and led the project team that implemented the 816 PBX Phone Interface which allows a pharmacist to communicate with a patient in a drive-thru lane using the pharmacy’s telephone system. The device also allowed for development of new business.
