EXECUTIVE PA IN VARIOUS JOBS – ESKOM - Date : Feb 1977 – Sept 2011

During my 35 years at Eskom I worked myself up from being a typist in the typing pool of Eskom’s Education Department to an Executive Secretary, working for the Chief Officer, Supply Chain Management.

While in the typing pool we were tasked to type training manuals to general office correspondence.

As I moved along in Eskom, I worked for various departments, typing project reports, minutes of meetings, general correspondence, etc. This also allowed me to get to know Eskom well and gave me a good background on how Eskom operated.

During the above period I took the early retirement at Eskom after 16 years and then came back to work as a contractor for 19 years.

EXECUTIVE PERSONNEL 1993 – 1998

As a temporary worker I also had the pleasure to do training of many underprivileged, young and aspiring black ladies who wanted to become private secretaries. I had the opportunity to set up a training school at Executive Personnel and trained the recruits on Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and my daughter did the Excel. Their ability to enter into a work situation was so much better as they were proficient in using the tools given to them. In one year I placed 54 star pupils who all got placed with great success.

The training was 10 days, included the packages and also the typing speeds that were required by various companies to between 55 and 60 words a minute. I ensured that they were all able to obtain this typing speed before going on to be placed.

My final job as Executive Secretary to the Supply Chain Management – Chief Officer included:

Responsibilities:

Understanding the company and delivering on their vision.

Comprehensive emailing and scheduling of diary appointments

Booking venues/catering for meetings, breakaways, company functions

Typing of reports, minutes of meeting, general correspondence (electronically and otherwise)

Managing customer payments. Controlling the payments and cheque requisitions (investigating reasons for double payments)

Follow up calls to clients/suppliers to evaluate our service

Skills Acquired:

Working under pressure.

Quick problem solving.

Proficiency on payments system (Manual).

Building relationships with external suppliers.

Managing deadlines.

AFRICAN EAGLE LIFE – Date: Oct 1970 – Feb 1976

Worked at African Eagle Life in Namibia and transferred to Johannesburg in 1974.

Duties included:

Client Services

Taking in cash for premiums and banking on daily basis

Calculating premiums for new insurance policies

Typing of correspondence letters to clients, etc.

Left African Eagle Life to have a baby.

1966 – 1970 I worked for West Bank, doing pretty much the same as the above. Except that I had the switchboard as a separate function. I also worked for a wholesaler, taking orders for goods purchased and had to prepare the sales invoices and payment advices.
