Career ambitions and statement of intent
I am a young African female born and raised in South Africa. I am currently pursuing a career in the field of psychology, particularly a2yr diploma in Communication and Counseling (2016/17).My short stint at the Midrand Graduate Institute during the year 2011 prepared me for this chosen field. Their offering was Developmental Studies A and B which included the Introduction to the Psychology Module. It is this commitment that has made me enroll at the South African College of Applied Psychology (SACAP) at the beginning of 2015, to enable me to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and experience I need to excel in helping people.
I have studied and succeeded in all modules offered for the period (2015-2017), except two (Counselling & Loss AND Working with Adolescence) modules, which are scheduled for 3rd term (September-November 2017). The modules I have studied and succeeded in are: Interpersonal Communication; Introduction to Psychology; Fundamentals of Helping Relationships; Study Skills; Counseling Modalities; Counseling Skills; Developmental Psychology; Crisis & Trauma; Diversity in the South African context, AND 200 hours of Practical Application based on all the modules mentioned herein.
I believe that working with people is the one significant gift I have. My positive outlook in life characterizes my personality and translates into caring for others, listening with empathy and a willingness to help. I am passionate about people and therefore keen to know more about the behavior of clients from all walks of life. I would be delighted if I can be provided the opportunity to work and gain the work experience I need. I believe working with people will have a positive impact on my interpersonal communication skills and exposure.
Though I was born and raised in the Eastern Cape I currently live with my Aunt in Johannesburg because back home there is no adequate support, since the passing on of both my parents. Being the eldest child of three, I do not have anyone in my immediate family to rely on since my Grandmother (whom I lived with) also passed on.
I know that I am destined for success in life because of my commitment to break the cycle of poverty in my family and leaving a legacy of self-reliance. I am seeking assistance in identifying opportunities that will set me up on this irreversible path to success.

Work Experience
My first work experience was in the hospitality field. I worked during school holidays at a restaurant in Soweto. This exposure at Oupa’s Restaurant offered me the opportunity to interact with people, improving my listening skills as I took orders from customers and ensured they were on time and correct. I also appreciated the work world as I learned to keep time and be diligent with my work. After completing my Matric in 2012, I studied psychology and completed my practicals at the end of April 2017.
On completion of theoretical modules offered at SACAP in 2016, I then progressed to practical field work and theory application. For a month I worked under supervision and completed all practicals successfully achieving a 74% pass rate for my written project report and final presentation to a panel of supervisors from the South African School of Applied Psychology (SACAP) including my Supervisors from Khuluma Family Counselling.
My first practical application was at the Hope Fountain Combined High School in Midrand. I subsequently continued with field work at Khuluma Family Counselling, a non-governmental organisation based in Centurion. On behalf of Khuluma I conducted basic counselling in an informal settlement called Mooiplaas. My work included working with families and addressing social issues therein. I applied play therapy skills to conduct counselling for children, I also conducted adolescents counselling and extended counselling to older people. I then had to prepare weekly reports to my supervisors who were responsible for formal assessment and the allocation of marks.
In Khuluma Family Counselling I contributed in terms of helping out my colleagues with implementing the Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Project – the project was about assessing domestic violence in Moooiplaas. I also went on home visits and screened community members who qualified for IPV. In the organization I assisted as part of a team: We collected and processed further the data that we had gathered on behalf of Khuluma Family IVP Project.
With the support from our Supervisors, we crafted formal reports based on our findings on the IVP Project, then submitted them to our Supervisors for correction and final assessment. In staff meetings I contributed by providing feedback to staff members about the Intimate Partner Violence (IVP) and Victim Empowerment Project (VEP). I also conducted an Awareness Programme, which included talking to members of the Mooiplaas Community about sexual abuse and also educated teenagers on sexual intercourse and how to practice safe sex and better still, made them appreciate the advantages of abstinence.
Volunteer Placement
I am volunteering in the South African depression and anxiety ground (Sadag).Which is a non-profit organization, and I work as a telephonic counsellor. Assisting and support people who are suffering with challenges of life as well as mental health issues. At Sadag we focus mostly on mental health issues such as depression, bipolar, anxiety, trauma and schizophrenia. We also do school talks which I attended once because I have few months volunteering at Sadag .
