I believe I’m pretty fit for this position. I regard my communications skills, teamwork ethic, and commitment to high standards as some of my greatest strengths. I can make my point very clearly, succinctly, and logically with little miscommunication. This characteristic has proven crucial in allowing me to communicate and get along with different types of people as well as understand their needs while communicating my own, which makes me very good at presentations and reports. I hold myself to very high standards, and I consider myself very meticulous in all my undertakings.
Besides, I have taken courses related to machine learning such as statistical pattern recognition, data and text mining, and computer vision and image processing. Very interested in algorithms developments and implementations. Proficient in C/C++, MATLAB. I have also taken courses related to statistical analysis such as Biostatistics and Math Methods in Biomedical Engineering Major, and Statistical Models and Methods in Mathematics in Math Major. Very familiar with all kinds of statistical analysis method, hypothesis testing, mathematical models, regressions, simulations, etc. proficient in MATLAB, JMP doing statistical analysis. These experiences provide me with professional background, which enables me to communicate with teammates and customers fluently, and understands their needs easily. My teammates often describe me as their interpreter and translator among teams.
Other than technical skills, I’m very good at talking with individuals and groups about their needs and ask the right questions to surface essential requirements information, to understand what people say and to detect what they might be hesitant to say, to evaluate the information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, decompose high-level information into details, abstract up from low-level information to a more general understanding, and distinguish presented user requests from the underlying true needs, to participate in requirements elicitation workshops, to validate data obtained via other techniques, such as site visits, and expose new areas for elicitation, to communicate information effectively to the department’s customers and stakeholders, to work with the array of information gathered during elicitation and analysis and to cope with rapidly changing information, to help facilitate discussions, and to represent requirements information in graphical forms that augment textual representations in natural language.
There are some interesting projects that I have done. For example, my current project is working on assessing how much of the variance in diffusion tensor-derived fractional anisotropy (FA) across older persons is explained voxel-wise by different linear models, and MATLAB’s Statistics Toolbox was used to fit different linear models in each voxel of the skeleton, and doing statistical analysis. Working on this project in the lab (IIT – Medical Imaging Research Center) offers me the opportunity to gain experience about working with large data sets, and experimental design and analysis skills.
I’ve also participated in an undergraduate Student Innovative Technology Project while I was during my undergraduate study, called ‘The Human ECG Acquisition and Early Warning Analysis System Design Project’, which gave me the opportunity to put what I had already learned in the classroom and from books into practice. I was responsible for the cardiac signals processing part. During this project, as the team leader, except the technical part I’m in charge of, I need to organize working schedule for whole team and conducted periodic team meeting, and interact with my teammates, each person is different, I need to communicate with them in different ways so that they feel comfortable to talk with me about their concerns and thoughts. I need to evaluate the information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, to help facilitate discussions, and to represent requirements information in graphical forms that augment textual representations in natural language, finally come up with presentations and written reports.
Another project is an Algorithm Development Design for Lung Cancer Nodules Detection in CT Images, which applied Matlab to segment lung matter with Otsu threshold method, lesions in the lungs with Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) filter, performed 4-connectivity and 8-connectivity connected component labeling (CCL) analysis to extract various features (area, compactness, perimeter, etc.) of the lesion candidates. Finally, classified the lesion candidates and selected lesions with rule-based scheme testifying the computed accuracy of each method. This project was implemented by myself, formal presentation and report are required, and I got good grade for this project.
