After relocating and selling an ownership stake in late 2015, asked to contribute in an advisory role through 2016. Notable achievements include:
Start-up subsidiary :2007-2015: GM/COO Precision Specialty Gases to direct all operations, finance and administration for a global OEM manufacturing and services firm serving the industrial, energy extraction and medical specialty gas sectors.
Start-up subsidiary :2008-2015: GM/COO Absolute Zero Cryogenics to direct all operations, finance and administration for a diversified services firm serving the industrial, energy extraction and medical specialty gas sectors.
Orchestrated an ESOP-buyout. As part of a management group at Weldcoa, solicited by the owner to buy the firm. To raise purchase capital, structured funding through a new outside employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). Working closely with a variety of legal counsel, CPAs and other professionals, negotiated an aggressive purchase price and favorable financing terms. Completed a seamless acquisition and transition to new ownership while avoiding any outside debt.
Played a key role in a recapitalization. Several years after acquiring Weldcoa, the ownership group wanted to buy out the ESOP that held a minority ownership position in order to take full control of the company. Obtained expert advice from attorneys, accountants and a third-party valuation firm to structure a transaction. Secured favorable interest on bank financing to retire the loan from the ESOP.
Quadrupled revenues & hit record profits. Weldcoa was looking for ways to improve financial performance. Developed aggressive marketing, sales and distribution strategies. Focused on growing sales to existing clients and expanding the customer base. Pursued opportunities to trim operating costs and COGS. Grew from millions to tens of millions. Improved EBITDA 25%.
Achieved an all-time best safety record in a turnaround. Excessive accident rates at Weldcoa resulted in rising labor and insurance costs. Designed and implemented a comprehensive new EH&S initiative, including new processes, standards and a mandatory enterprise wide training program. Focused on Best Practices and heightened accountability. Cut reportable incidents 66%, slashing insurance costs 25%.
Spearheaded an expansion, fueling profitable growth. Rapid growth outpaced capacity at Weldcoa. To feed growing demand, planned a facilities expansion. Found a suitable site. Negotiated a purchase price 17%+ below asking price and well below market value. Secured favorable bank financing. Totally revamped the building. Invested in hundreds of thousands in new capital equipment. Increased capacity by 30% while improving efficiency 35%+, enabling a full ROI on the project in less than four years.
Fostered nonstop game-changing product innovation. Weldcoa’s product portfolio was growing stale and failed to capitalize on emerging demand. Saw a need to diversify to capture untapped opportunities. Spearheaded a new R&D, product development and commercialization initiative with a customer-driven focus. Leveraged voice-of-the-customer processes to develop fifteen new, best-selling products including novel helium purifier, cylinder inverter, automated specialty gas mixing/filling and automated gas analysis systems. Captured millions in new business from several key Fortune 100 clients.
Improved productivity, efficiency & agility with a new ERP. Weldcoa needed to replace an aging, ineffective Epicor ERP platform. Researched, sourced and led negotiations to acquire an Infor SyteLine solution. Directed internal/external IT, accounting, finance and operations professionals to install, configure, test and train staff on the new system, completing a seamless migration ahead of plan. Dramatically increased visibility, reporting, forecasting and planning capabilities and accuracy. Captured 100% ROI on the platform in less than three years, while improving operational efficiencies by double digits.
Overcame a capitalization challenge to win a major contract. Weldcoa was in jeopardy of losing a multimillion-dollar order from a Fortune 100 leader in industrial gases/chemicals due to the costs of raw materials and storage required. Negotiated special terms and just-in-time delivery from key suppliers, including steel makers. Resolved a potential short-term cash crunch while obtaining a six-month lid on pricing. Avoided the need for borrowing, while helping to close the profitable high-value deal.
Improved workforce synergies, cohesion, morale & engagement. Separated by location, staff and core business, Weldcoa’s three divisions were siloed. Looking to improve ties among the entities, launched programs including weekly all-division management meetings and monthly all-staff luncheons. Captured significant gains in employee satisfaction, enabling continued high levels of retention. Leveraged the increased connectivity to generate new ideas, boundary-free knowledge transfer, innovative problem solving approaches and potent interdivisional synergies.
Reengineered benefits, boosting participation & staff retention. After being acquired by a management group, Weldcoa needed to address a changing benefits environment. Sourced and selected a new insurance broker. Reviewed dozens of potential health plans, settling on two, to provide choices for staff. Conducted comprehensive educational sessions for all staff in two languages, outlining the pros/cons of each plan. Increased participation 32 points to 97%, driving sharp reductions in potential premium increases by expanding the risk pool. Better met the varied needs of all staff.
Earlier career: General Manager, Famous Liquors. Managed a seven-store retail chain, 40+ staff and P&L on $7M in revenue. Designed and implemented process, training, merchandising, pricing and other improvements to boost sales, profits, traffic and customer satisfaction.
