ENEA Software & Services Phoenix, AZ July, 2017 – August, 2017

Software/Systems Test Engineer – LM100J Commercial Freighter

Short-term contract developing Visual Basic (VB) test scripts using Visual Studio to provide Robustness testing of the Flight Management System (FMS) requirements to DO-178B Level B standards. PVCS Serena Dimensions Configuration Management (CM) tools were used to manage and track test script modifications and reviews while DOORS was used to reference the system robustness requirements. Accessed remote automated test benches to develop and run test scripts. Employed AGILE SCRUM techniques to allocate and report on daily development tasks. Test development required active research to fully exercise the FMS equipment as well an interaction with client engineers to resolve questions and issues while ensuring compliance with client processes and procedures.

Key Accomplishments:

Identified systems requirements in DOORS that were not testable by automated testing or not valid requirements and reported these to the client for investigation.

Used existing VB functions available from the client whenever possible to reduce test script development time.

Used industry and previous FMS experience to research and identify external public resources that provided pilot information on various flight plan elements such as particular types of takeoff (non-SID), ILS approaches, TACAN, etc.. Sources such as Flight Aware decoded routes and existing public flight plans to and from common airports and waypoints.

REAL TIME COMPANIES Phoenix, AZ May, 2015 – April, 2017

Senior Engineer – Pilatus Project

Designed and executed complex systems requirements (DOORs), software development (C/C and verification and validation (C scripting, LDRA) for the Pilatus PC-24 SVJ Business Jet using Agile methods. Upgraded and expanded the engine Fire Protection System (FPS) to improve safety redundancy and incorporate new functionality; conducted regression analysis and side effects checking; and analyzed design changes to ensure DO-178B objectives met for software, safety, and trace-ability. Coordinated between the development and verification teams to determine the best test method for obscure or unusual requirements. Analyzed the different test methods such as writing a test script, performing a unit test, or using verify-by-inspection (VBI) and verify-by-analysis (VBA).

Key Accomplishments:

Worked with client to increase system robustness by altering product requirements for the engine FPS to develop a robust system design that expanded the system from a flyable prototype to full operation fulfilling DO-178B Level A and B objectives. These changes also incorporated system and software modifications to improve source-selection from hardware inputs, control valves, and pilot-activated inputs to enable the system and select options.

Used an Agile-style development process of quick turn iterations to system requirements and software implementation to rapidly incorporate client design changes and updates as the result of software integration lab (SIL) and flight testing prior to initial aircraft type certification.

Applied mathematical and computer science principles using Excel, Visual Studio, and C, to design algorithms and engineering solutions.

Developed run-for-score formal tests from high level and low level requirements for the Ice Protection System (IPS) to satisfy DO-178B, Level A objectives, MC/DC testing, and client standards. For example, expanded the IPS test scripts using C, Visual Studio, and LDRA to fully test hysteresis requirements in accordance with these standards.

Tracked progress of software development and verification activities against milestones via complex Excel sheets.

Mentored and performed oversight of new test engineers in learning the tools and processes for creating formal software verification cases and procedures (SVCP).

Enhanced peer review team efficiency by developing a Word document template with instructions on how to interpret peer review criteria listing relevant documents and requirements based on feedback from client. Templates reviewed by client’s QA department, serving to both document the review method used and confirm DO-178B objectives were satisfied to the client’s satisfaction.

Tracked progress of software development and verification activities against schedule and performance milestones with regular reports to management.

BK CONSULTING Phoenix, AZ May, 2011 – May, 2015

Business Consultant

Provided strategic direction in various business ventures covering business startup, operations, and administration.

Key AccomplishmentS:

Successfully assisted in business development efforts for a small growing company including evaluation of how best to meet advertising goals and generate client leads within budget constraints.

Analyzed business models and worked collaboratively to pinpoint solutions to maximize return-on-investment (ROI) in meeting business objectives and growth objectives.

HONEYWELL Phoenix, AZ August, 1996 – May, 2011

Software Engineer III – Primus Epic EASy, Software Center of Excellence, Displays Group

Developed and deployed software using C/C++ and Visual Studio for various complex projects including new Noise Abatement Department Procedure (NADP) functionality for F900 takeoff graphics page. Integrated new functions on engine throttle controls and preset takeoff and climb limits. Prototyped F900 new avionics page layouts for customer consideration and feedback with different designs and graphical objects requiring rapid turn-around (Agile methods). Designed and implemented brakes monitoring graphics page for the G650 from prototype to delivery including writing detailed design requirements for the new system in the more classic Waterfall design method; and rewrote fuel flow logic and graphics including new FADEC inputs to the Flight Management Window (FMW) and Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) display.

Key Accomplishments:

Used Visual Studio to develop flight deck software from systems requirements to meet DO-178B, Level A and B objectives while using desktop and lab debugging to informally test and troubleshoot the software during development.

Served as the lead software engineer for the Dassault Falcon F7X business jet and Embaer-145 Regional Jet (RJ) projects. Responsible for assigning workload, budget fidelity, tracking milestone progress, training and oversight, coordinating with other engineering teams, compiling and delivering software loads, dealing with schedule and content adjustments, ensuring rapid response to customer issues and reporting to management.

Using Visual Studio and C/C++, corrected problems with the design of the main hydraulic standby pump system by applying computer science and mathematical principles to redesign the trend calculation algorithm. The new design used more rapid data collection and a more finely-tuned monitoring design to better compute pressure trends, complete critical evaluation of the pressure trend, and generate the appropriate crew notifications graphically.

Used MATLAB to design and implement a complex digital logic model of a fault warning tree for the Dassault Falcon F7X, including timers and recursion, with outputs mapped to the cockpit displays.

Evaluated and tested new tools for feasibility, while consistently optimizing processes and procedures. Reduced software bugs by 25% in first month as software lead by evaluating and modifying existing procedures. Continued to monitor and reduce defects improving software quality and customer satisfaction while reducing re-work and improving CPI.

Used Microsoft Project and Excel to monitor project costs. Also used in-house performance tools to track Schedule Performance Index (SPI) and Cost Performance Index (CPI) for projects.

Performed internal reviews of proposed changes to the system design as the Change Control Board (CCB) software expert.
