MasterBrand Cabinets Jasper, IN June 2014 August 2014
Manufacturing/Project Engineer Internship 40+ hours worked per week
Revamped entire frame-cell department through a multi-phase project. Improved workflow, decreased production time by 15%, reduced production errors, and eliminated “tribal knowledge.”
Identified and arranged over 500 inventory pieces into labeled racks to streamline the first stage of the cabinet frame building process. This key step in the department overhaul improved the team production time by approximately 5-10% and reduced the scrap-per-cabinet by $0.10.
Developed, implemented, and maintained daily tracking systems to identify and quantify production error causes within department based on 9 criteria at one station and 12 key criteria at the final check station.
Collaborated with department workers and upper management to obtain and analyze production time and scrap data. From this data acquisition the average production time per cabinet and the average cost of scrap-per-cabinet was calculated based on a series of time studies and the scrap reports from the previous and current fiscal years. Excel files were created from the scrap and time study information to track and discover the key areas the team should be focused on improving to see the largest overall added value. Recommended new department layout based on department feedback, a simplified process, and a linear manufacturing process order.
Calculated expected cost and savings of department change, with a 100% calculated return on investment within one fiscal year.
Assigned task of completing bi-weekly safety audits (6S). Addressed potential areas of safety improvement and ensured proper protective equipment (PPE) was worn.
