Mechanical Engineer

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am successfully completing my final year at the University of Portland in Portland, Oregon. I currently hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 while pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering and look to graduate in early May of 2018. During these four years of my college experience, I’ve taken advanced courses in upper level mathematics and physics. I have also, in line with my degree path, taken engineering spe- cific courses designed to be tastes of the profession. In my first semester, I was tasked with designing and building a prototype for a walking cane that stands on its own when not in use. I have taken a few courses that revolve around the computing software program, MATLAB, as well as the CAD program, SolidWorks. I have also been tasked with doing group and in- dependent research to simulate real world engineering projects. In these final two semesters, I am working with three other mechanical engineering students to complete our Senior Cap- stone design project. Our project is to create a sawmill for the hobbyist woodworker that is competitive with current market options and produced in accordance with the requests of a simulated client. These challenges have given me practical knowledge applicable to the real world of engineering.

Over the past five summers, I have held three laborer positions and acted as intern at two landscape companies. My goal during these summers was not about getting experience for a future career path. However, I learned valuable lessons about the importance of hard work and perseverance in some trying and difficult situations that I am applying to my studies in Portland. My respect for the men and women working these types of jobs cannot be under- stated.

Where the past summers I have taken temporary laborer positions, I am asking for a full-time position within the engineering field where I can learn as much as possible. Although I am mostly interested in mechanical engineering, I am seeking experience within any and all en- gineering disciplines before I make any decisions on a more specific career path. Although, at 21, I may be considered young and inexperienced for many positions, I have always been recognized as hard-working and always exceed expectations in all that I attempt. I appreciate any consideration for a position where I am able to work hard and develop in my chosen profession. Please note that I am attending the University of Portland full-time.
