Honors Chemistry Research - Elrod Laboratory; Oberlin College, September 2016-July 2017
• Organic Synthesis
- Ran multi-step organic synthesis procedures, usually 2-5 steps.
- Used organic mechanistic analysis to set up procedures and to determine likely products from unexpected results.
- Extensive experience with phase extraction and final product isolation.
- 1H and 13C NMR analysis.
- Ran gas-phase synthetic procedures.
• Data Analysis
- Monitored synthetic results through NMR spectral analysis.
- Analyzed kinetic data from NMR peak integrations.
- Used rate-laws to determine lifetimes of reactions in various conditions.
• Laboratory Management
- Researched and reviewed protocols for new experimental procedures and to troubleshoot previously ran procedures.
- Read academic textbooks and previously published papers to gain general understanding of research goals.
- Reached out to other professors (with more organic chemistry experience) when procedures did not go as planned.
• Written and Verbal Presentation
- Wrote a 60 page thesis reporting my findings.
- Gave two 15 minute presentations of my work.
Community Outreach Intern - Neighborcare Health Columbia City Clinic, Seattle, June 2016-August 2016
• Daily Clinic Upkeep
- Kept patient room bulletin boards up-to-date with fliers for nearby events and health resources.
- Designed a lobby bulletin board with tips for healthy living, and kept it up-to-date with healthy recipes and at-home workouts.
- Worked with registered nurses to make sure they had relevant information (related to health resources) for their patients.
- Organized the delivery of children’s books for patient waiting rooms.
• Event Planning and Organization
- Attended weekly farmers markets and set up a tent to provide information about the clinic.
- Helped organize Neighborcare’s participation in the Rainier Valley Heritage Festival.
- Organized a book drive, sponsored by the Seattle Public Library, to give away new books to children visiting the clinic.
Research Intern - Baliga Laboratory; Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle, June 2015-August 2015
• Laboratory Work
- Ran numerous PCR protocols.
- Used absorption spectroscopy to monitor concentration of cells.
- Gained experience working in a private laboratory; learned laboratory etiquette, professionalism, and how to keep the larger goal in mind.
- Provided a brief presentation of my work to the head of the lab and his associate.
• Literature Research
- Read numerous research papers to determine DNA sequences that promote yeast flocculation.
- Used literature research to design a DNA sequence that strongly enhances flocculation. Other related laboratory experience:
• Analytical Chemistry Research - Thompson Laboratory; Oberlin College, February 2015 - May 2015
• Many college courses that offered me experience with laboratory instruments, such as LC-MS, GC- MS, calorimeters, IR spectrometer, and various spectrophotometers. Academic Awards and Recognitions:
