Special Interest Experience
Prior to my nursing education I was employed in diagnostic imaging. I had the privilege of being awarded a teaching position in New South Wales, Australia with a temporary work visa from 1990-1991. My employer was Health Education Unit in Tamworth. I taught Diagnostic Medical Sonography in the rural towns. We were successful as the majority of the students continued to work in Diagnostic Sonography when my work Visa was completed. Several students sat for Diploma in Medical Ultrasound Boards (DMU) which is the Australian Certifying Body. Accomplishments
On return to the United States 1991, I gained employment with Department of Defense at Patrick Air force Base as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. The radiology department had a dated Siemens ultrasound unit which was not in use. After purchasing new equipment, I organized the department, established protocols for examinations, placed special preparations for each type of examination, and built a teaching file. Documentation sonographic results accompanied the films to the radiologist. I continued to work in this capacity from 1991 full time and then part-time while I pursued my Associate Degree in Nursing in 1998-2000 Scholarly Project:
Required research during my last semester of graduate school, allowed me to pursue a greater understanding of Diabetes Type II and the growing numbers of our society who are being diagnosed with this disease. The research and presentation of Diabetes Type II revealed the significant sequela that accompanies uncontrolled disease. It was clear that RNs had the greatest opportunity to teach education and management of Diabetes to prevent future complications. Also of great importance was the revelation of the percentage of the health care dollar that is expended on uncontrolled disease.
Personal preference in the clinical role:
It has always been my preference to remain in clinical care rather than pursue a management avenue in my nursing role and in my nurse practitioner role. My greatest contribution as a nurse and nurse practitioner is the potential to help others make positive changes in their lives.
