Life: Is it fair or unfair?
People often state “Life itself is unfair”, based on many events that have oocurred in the past, as well as what is currently happening during our present. It is often said that things happen for a reason; we, the people, just have to follow along, but is that applicable when something that is not right happens to an individual, a population, even a community. Indeed, we have laws, that are created to protect our society, but there are also individuals who feel as if he or she can break the law and do whatever he or she desires. So who really has the authority to decided what is fair or is not fair? There are numerous of things that I have witnessed within our society that I feel was not fair towards myself, as well as others. There are so many topics on being unfair that I can pinpoint and discuss, but I will share some that I think are a bigger concern to our society as a whole.
Since I was younger child, all throughout grade school, I was taught that closer to my senior year, I would have to take a huge test that would determine whether or not I would be able to graduate high school, called the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. As I got older, I researched and learned more about the concept of this exam. I felt as though it was a method to hinder students from graduating high school and furthering their education. The material that was on the exam, basically was not covered in majority of the classes students took. Some schools were not even able to have the opportunity to be provided with study materials to teach students and help prepare them for the exam. I always thought that it was not fair for an exam to have power to keep a student from receiving his or her diploma, disregarding if his or her grape point average was pretty decent and grades were passing. A child's education should be top priority and should be grasp with that attitude “We are going to work together and help students be the best academically and cognitively. No child LEFT behind!”
The old quote “Don't judge a book by its cover” is a saying that I hear a lot of people say, yet are being contradictive because of their actions. People do, in fact, “judge books by their covers”, and that is not right nor fair. No person should believe he or she has the audacity to judge the next person and feel as if they can depict something about that person just by looking at them. I have witnessed many stereotypes of racial profiles and I was not happy about it. Just because one person of an ethnic may do something, that entire ethnic may be stereotype for that same action. That is not right. Some people are rude to others just because of the way that they may appear, or without saying one word to them. That upsets me because people never know what others are going through or what their personality are. My opinion, judging another person, especially before you cordially meet them, speaks more about YOUR character.
As a child growing up, I was Blessed to have been provided with shelter, food, clothing and shoes, and able to attend schools that helped me receive a decent foundation of a good education. However, there are others who did not have that opportunity, possibly because of their school system and appointed officials were not as considerate of their education and well-being. Also, there are people who can not receive certain assistance, because of different laws created by the judicial system. I do not feel that it is fair for those people who can not afford healthcare to not have it. Where is the conscious of helping others when they are in need? It seems to me, that the poorer are getting poorer, while the richer are getting richer. Instead of trying to find ways to help others better themselves, some people are so quick to shut people out and just focus on self; that is not the way of life. One should not shade others out because they may lack some physical things or feel as thought they are not 'worthy' of receiving something. It should not be all about self, but also what can self do to help the next person(s) become better.
Nevertheless, there are other conlficts within our society, these topics were greater for me to share because I have witnessed and experienced them for myself. The society, as w hole, really needs to come together(or at least) try to, for the sake of everyone's well being. Looking down on others because they may be of a certain ethnicity is not mature nor the right thing to do. No one is perfect and no one should act as if they are, for we all are viewed and loved equally. Whether people realize this or not, or whether they want to accept this following statement or not, “We are ALL in this together!” There is nothing prosperous that will come forth from the actions of mistreating others, doing wrong, not being truthful, and being evil. We will not be on this green Earth forever; so why not try to live right and fair with one another here. Once, again, who has the authority to say what is fair and unfair. At the end of time, there will only be one Final Say So. These are some of my concerns of our society today. As stated earlier, people may say that “life itself is unfair”, but we, the people, have the POWER to change that!
