COVER LETTER

To whom it may concern:

My name is Travis Ekmark. I am currently the AP US History teacher, social studies department chairperson, and history curriculum writer at Irving High School. I began teaching when I was twenty-two, and by the time I was twenty-four my skill and drive led to my placement as the leader of a department of twenty teachers and the creator of curriculum followed by every US History teacher in my district. While these accomplishments speak to my self-driven nature and ability to lead, they also serve as testament to the limitations of the teaching profession. At the age of twenty-four I had reached the pinnacle of my profession.

I was introduced to web-development by a friend when I was twenty-seven, and after taking my first online course through a platform titled Udacity, I became hooked. I was enamored by the concept: provide solutions and tangible results for complex ideas. As equally alluring was the idea that there was a community of professionals who had so much to offer to my growth in this profession, and that this community was only a click away.

After two years of late-night/early-morning study, practice, and development I officially entered into software development as a professional. My first experience in the profession was as a software developer for a company titled Bond, Inc, based out of New York City. I entered as a relative novice in back-end development, but with a little more experience with iOS development. My back-end role transitioned from writing API documentation and test code to writing new endpoints in Node.js and the Hapi.js framework for their custom-made API. Halfway through my contract with the company they asked me to begin developing front-end architecture for the Bond iOS app. During my last few weeks with Bond, Inc. I was writing front-end code using Swift and updating or creating new endpoints on the back-end to increase the capacity of our app. Just prior to my contract’s termination date, Bond, Inc. and I entered into discussions for remote-based employment on a full-time schedule--these discussions ended due to financial restraints of the company and the decision to make the current state of the app it’s “final” state.

For as long as I can remember I have taken on two or three roles simultaneously in an effort to improve upon my passions as a software developer and provide direction for the youth of my community--all while dedicating myself to the prosperity and well-being of my family. While my endeavors in the aforementioned engagements have been rewarding on both a personal and professional level, I cannot help but wonder if my participation in several unrelated professions at once has enabled me to be merely good in several roles as opposed to being a master of my craft. I would love the opportunity to apply myself fully and unrelentlessly to a single craft; to both benefit from and be of benefit to a team whose members are as equally driven to improve; and to prove that I have what it takes to be an elite developer.

Very respectfully,

Travis Ekmark
