2017 - Present: Microsoft UC Consultant [United States] Acting as technology and business enablement advocate to advise customers on the best practice methods in how to utilize Skype and telephony solutions to drive competitive advantage and ROI. Leading the discovery, creating the technical design, implementing different collaboration solutions, including:

Skype for Business Online

Skype for Business on premises

Skype for Business hybrid solutions

Articulating Low Level Designs including; Lync/Skype for Business features, Active Directory integration, directory synchronization, single sign on, federation, telephony cohabitation and SIP trunking. Assessing the customer environment for Microsoft UC needs to design/implement different solutions to address its pain-points. This include activities such as:

Performing health check on the existing Lync/Skype for Business environment.

Assessing network readiness for Skype for Business workload, specially voice workload.

Designing and architecting on premise, hybrid, and online Skype for Business deployments.

I worked on establishing a small business in the UK; activities conducted include doing market research, connecting with potential partners and suppliers, and developing the business plan. The business did not mature to the implementation phase due to different reasons, one of which was the Brexit vote conducted in 2016 and the effect it had on the UK economy.

2012 - 2015: System Engineer @ Northwestern University [Qatar] I worked as part of the IT team in the Qatar campus; my duties included performing system administration tasks and select system analyst/project management duties in heterogeneous environment comprising of Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Linux servers. Typical activities performed include:

Management of VMWare ESXi hosts and Dell EqualLogic SAN devices.

Design and implementation of document management structure to hold student records using Perceptive ImageNow software. This included designing document storage, defining security roles and permissions, and automating some of the tasks using ImageNow iScripts.

Support, maintenance and upgrade of different Linux software systems such as WordPress, Request Tracker, and Traverse.

Handling day-to-day escalations from the help desk team pertaining to users’ permissions, group membership in Active Directory, and ImageNow client side issues. 2011 - 2012: System/Network Engineer @ JDSU [Canada] I worked as part of the IT team in Ottawa, ON; and took the lead role in the deployment of and migration to Lync 2010 to be the unified platform at JDSU for IM, presence, Audio/Video conferencing, and Enterprise Voice (PSTN calls). The infrastructure supported 6,500 employees in 20 counties all over the world. The project included different aspects:

Acting as the lead engineer for the global infrastructure deployment, which included deploying and managing the Lync servers and third party PSTN gateways. The gateways used included AudioCodes Mediant 1000 gateway/SBA, and Cisco voice routers.

Implementing and testing the failover and high availability scheme among the different Lync pools globally. This included intra-pool failures, as well as site-level fail over to a secondary pool in remote geographic location.

Designing and implementing the Lync Dial Plan, Voice Policies, Common-Area phones, and mobile device access.

Working with the senior management and project managers to identify pain points, technical dependencies, and cutover plans and dates for different sites globally.

Preparing technical documentation for the help desk team to be able to handle user enablement, and level-1 support tickets.

2011-2011: UC Consultant @ UC Galaxy [Canada]

I worked as an independent UC consultant in Ottawa, ON; where I handled a project for one of Canada’s federal government agencies with relation to OCS 2007/Lync 2010. The project scope included troubleshooting some of the issues pertaining to OCS and its integration with Nortel CS1000 PBX, knowledge transfer to some of the stakeholders, and putting a design document/blueprint for the migration of the infrastructure to Lync 2010. 2009 - 2011: Premier Field Engineer @ Microsoft [Canada] I worked as part of Microsoft Services team supporting premier customers on issues related to Live Communications Server 2005, Office Communications Server 2007/R2, and Lync. My duties included different activities:

Installation, configuration, and management of complex OCS deployments, most of the enterprises I supported had multiple thousands of users.

Provisioning and integrating Microsoft UC products with third party PBX and gateway vendors such as Nortel, Dialogic, AudioCodes, and SIP trunk providers.

Configuring Location Profiles, Voice Routes, PSTN Usages, and Voice Policies for multiple sites in North America.

Developing management scripts to handle user activation, migration, and backup & recovery.

Proactively providing recommendations to help improve the overall health of the customer’s UC environment and prevent future critical situations.

2007 - 2009: Network Services Engineer @ Nortel [Canada] I worked as part of the voice support group in the internal IT department. My duties included handling the deployment and operation of Microsoft Unified Communications platform at Nortel. The platform was composed of Office Communications Servers 2007/R2 and Exchange 2007 UM integrated with Nortel’s CS1000 and CS2000 telephone switches. My duties included:

Designing and deploying the different Office Communication Server roles to support users globally.

Configuring call routing, number translations, and permissions using OCS Location Profiles, Voice Routes, and PSTN Usages.

Handling the migration of users from LCS 2005 to OCS 2007, in a smooth and automated manner.

Managing the inter-working of Active Directory and Group Policy with OCS 2007. Developing and maintaining different scripts to automate user and server management operations.

Supporting and troubleshooting end-user issues with relation to VoIP and PBX integration. 2005 - 2007: Research Assistant @ Carleton University [Canada] While working on my master thesis, I developed a distributed simulation engine to execute complex models in a distributed Unix/Linux environments (using C++ & Java), taking advantage of Web Services technologies (Apache- Axis, Tomcat, SOAP, WSDL).
