Supervisor Pathology Laboratory Services (centralized histology, cytology, transcription and autopsy departments)

Supervise 24-hour functions of the Pathological Laboratory Section. Responsible for all aspects of the Anatomic Pathology operations of this 729-bed facility and sister 100 bed hospital Long Beach Community Hospital including staffing (43 Histotechs, Cytotechs, Lab Assistants, Pathology grossing Assistants, and Residents), regulatory oversight and coordination of services for the hospital and outreach patients. Ensure fiscal ($1.5 million annual budget) and human resources are managed including represented job categories to provide excellent services to the section’s users and integrating these objectives into the daily operation of the department, developing SOP’s and maintaining regulatory procedures to successfully meet OSHA, JCAHO and CAP standards and inspections in both facilities. During my three years in this position we have designed, trained and implemented three new electronic medical record systems (EMR’s) including EPIC, Cerner Millenium II and Cerner CoPath for anatomic pathology. We have maintained up-to date techniques for IHC and special stains with Ventana equipment including validation of additional 29 antibodies. Due to budgetary cuts and reduction in staff, I have filled in for Histotechnologists (embedding, cutting, special and IHC staining), Pathology transcriptionists (transcription, send-out implementation, physician, patient and family contact) and Lab Assistants (accessioning, maintaining equipment, assisting with frozen sections, Non-GYN and GYN cytoprep, etc.) whenever needed.

Three Histotechs completed required education and training obtaining ASCP HT certification.

•Participated in many CHW offered classes in management skill building, working with union represented employees, evaluation and increasing staff satisfaction and performance.

•Had opportunity to grow knowledge of budget creation and spreadsheet data processes from very experienced Lab Directors.

•During times of staff shortages worked as Histotechnologist and Histology Supervisor to include all phases of histology; embedding, cutting, standard special stains, record keeping, frozen sections, equipment maintenance, and cytology preparation and staining.
