Technical Engineering Manager 01/2010 - 02/2017

Leading a team of 15+ engineers I’ve taken on the business-critical project which focused on exchanging Macy’s product data between backend systems and macys.com ecommerce site:

Led cross-functional teams on the initiative to improve ETL processing time and quality. Exceeded the project goals by reducing run time from 18 to 2 hours and the number of data failures to 1 per quarter.

Developed over 200 Oracle PL/SQL stored procedures and functions to further improve performance

Created over 100 Oracle materialized views in order to streamline and improve the whole ETL process

Managed the team that was overseeing the change processes for Oracle databases across all environments, provided and enforced corresponding guidelines.

Collaborated with the Production Support team to understand their needs and pain-points. Introduced enhancements to their L2 and L3 support procedures. As Holiday season is very important to Macys, several successful changes were made to greatly significant improve communication procedures for all teams in case of code errors or data failures.

Engaged teams to introduce and improve automatic build and streamlined deployment of both Java and PL/SQL code. Working closely with DevOps team and introduced a one-click solution for deployment of the components to Staging and Production environments. As a result of this effort both run time and failure ratios were greatly decreased.

Architected, managed and deployed to production a new ETL interface based on Oracle materialized views to further reduce the load time. Worked with other teams to allow access to the backend system’s data using a well-documented API.

Led various other projects, such as Incremental Data Exchange using RESTful API, Search Rules Engine optimization and more.

Performed regular code reviews and introduced cross-training to all team members on new technologies such as Java, SQL and Linux

Initiated the real-time data analytics POC based on emerging technologies, such as Scala, Apache Kafka and Flume with a custom-built Twitter connector, memsql in-memory database and IBM UBX.

Developed a custom tool to automate deployment of Play Framework components to Jetty, Tomcat and JBoss servers, using Java and Shell Scripting

Technical Lead 07/2008 – 01/2010

Initially joined macys.com to supervise product data feed to amazon.com and later focused on other projects, including:

ETL project for exchanging backend system’s data with macys.com ecommerce site (product and pricing information). The project was in a bad shape, with all files being generated in no less than 18 hours and 30% error ratio. I’ve assembled a team of “on-loan” engineers and the whole application was redesigned, decreasing runtime to 8 hours with 200% increase in stability

Became a mentor of the Production Support team, advising the team members how to find, troubleshoot and fix both data and code failures.

Designed and developed a Java PCI compliance application that encrypts customer’s personal information in real time. Worked closely with other teams to ensure encryption/decryption is working flawlessly. Helped macys.com website team fix a bug that would make the decryption impossible in some cases

Hired as a senior engineer for the EAI Dev team I was tasked to evaluate, design and implement an enterprise-grade solution for migrating PMI legacy applications from IBM iSeries (AS/400) mainframe to a J2EE-based platform running on top of IBM’s WebSphere InterChange Server (WICS, formerly known as Crossworlds):

Fine-tuned the design of Request/Response Framework (RRF) – a set of WICS-based components that is capable of tracking and ensuring the delivery of any transaction flowing through WICS regardless of its type and payload format.

Worked closely with both customers and team members to ensure that mapping changes requested by customers are implemented, deployed on time and follow the established guidelines.

Designed and managed the development of “Crossworlds Insight” – a web-based front-end tool which provided real-time access to the RRF transactional database (WebSphere AS, EDI, Oracle PL/SQL, Java, JSP, XML, AJAX, Servlets, Eclipse).
