Lead Topsides Process Engineer, Hebron Project (2009- 2013)

Provided overall guidance and leadership with respect to the process design and activities for the entire Hebron Topsides (hydrocarbon and utility systems). Developed and finalized Process Engineering related schedule and CTRs (cost, time and resource) for FEED and Detailed Engineering phases. Directly supervised two junior engineers and provided oversight of contractor’s process engineering team to deliver a safe design which met project specifications and schedule. Key responsibilities include:

Plan/Review Process Engineering related resource, planning, progress, schedule, and cost. Provided process engineering guidance for the entire project including Topsides, Drilling, Living Quarters (LQ), and Gravity Based Structure (GBS) teams. Planning, prioritize and oversight of the Contractor’s Process Team (25-30 engineers) activities and deliverables to meet design/procurement schedule and provide interdisciplinary support. Communicate needs, progress, priorities, and issues to project management, and facilitate the interface with other discipline leads, Operations, Regulatory, Drilling, GBS, and EMDC Consultants / Advisors.

Managed all internal and external process studies including: Flare verification including analysis to confirm Flow Induced Vibration (FIV) and Acoustic Induced Vibration (AIV) checks, Offshore Loading System (OLS) hydraulic pipeline study, Gravity Based Structure Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) thermal analysis, Production Separator chemical testing, CFD analysis of compact electrostatic coalescer and crude separator, completed Technology Qualification of the compact electrostatic coalescer and crude separator, dynamic simulation studies of the heating and cooling medium systems, surge analysis of the seawater lift system, PSV verification study, and established related technical guidelines to support design development.

Worked with Contractor and internal EM teams to actively manage the Drilling Pipeline, GBS interfaces and ensure that process engineering information was supplied in a timely manner to meet project schedule

Worked with Regulatory to address and close out regulatory queries from DNV and CNLOPB to ensure compliance. Managed and led additional environmental studies such as: Acrolein dispersion modeling, Flare knock out drum sizing verification to directly answer and address questions from the regulatory and verification authorities.

Acting Lead Process Engineer Alaska Gas Pipeline Project (2008 -2009)

Provided overall guidance and leadership with respect to process design and cost estimate for a 4 BSCFD gas treating plant (GTP) located in Alaska North Slope. Developed and finalized Process Engineering related schedule and CTRs for preFEED phase. Directly supervised one junior engineer and provided oversight of contractors' process engineering team (15 - 20 engineers) to generate process engineering deliverables to support the cost estimate for Open Season.

Directly managed and led multiple process studies to support process and utility system design and optimization such as: RAM analysis to verify reliability and availability of the GTP and pipeline, including compressor stations, flare scenarios analysis and design, gas treating technology selection studies, heating system optimization study.

Addressed process-related queries from BP and FERC during Open Season

Visited and toured BP's Alaska North Slope operations and ExxonMobil's LaBarge facilities

March 2007 - 2008

Facility Engineer for Bahrain proposal development. Functioned as client representative to work with engineering contractor for conceptual facility scoping and development.

Process engineer providing support and engineering surveillance for the East Area Project (Nigeria). Co-authored Technical Design Note concerning turndown capability in the NGL II Extraction Facility. Completed a production planning tool development for Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) which eventually could be utilized for NGL production planning and optimization. Providing Operations support and Surveillance services for the EAP project team.

Facility Engineer for Kalamkas oil field development (pre-FEED). Performed concept and technology selection studies for the topsides process design. Worked with various water treatment vendors for produced and seawater system design.

Facility Engineer for Al-Khaleej Gas 2 project. Performed engineering surveillance and P&IDs reviews during project EPC phase.

2,6 DTBP (di-tert-butyl phenol) Manufacturing in Freeport, Texas - $23.8MM

Grass-roots design and construction of a new 2,6 DTBP manufacturing facility. Oversaw front end design, detailed engineering, procurement, environmental permitting, construction, and startup activities for the new facility.

Design of the production facility was proprietary technology which was a combination of existing process facilities in Texas and a sister facility in Switzerland. Process optimization and energy savings ideas were incorporated in the plant layout and system design.

Managed a team of engineering contractors and in-house process engineers for the front end loading for design of reactor, neutralization, and distillation train utilizing a divided wall tower.

Oversaw necessary calculations and coordinated with environmental engineers for the facility permit.

Client representative assigned to manage the engineering contractor during front-end engineering, detailed engineering, procurement, and construction.

Oversaw scheduling, tracking, progress reporting, and generation of the preliminary estimate, front end loading estimate, and control estimate.

Implemented Honeywell’s Experion DCS system for the new facility.

Project completed on time and $1 MM under budget.

Project Engineer

June 2003 – November 2004

2,4 Xylenol Manufacturing in Freeport, Texas - $3.3MM

Retrofit of an existing facility on site to manufacture 2,4 Xylenol. Worked in coordination with in-house process engineer for preliminary process design and development of the Aspen simulation and material balance. Generated block flow diagrams, process flow diagrams, and P&IDs. Conducted P&ID and HAZOP reviews.

Performed distillation tower emissions calculations and coordinated with the environmental engineer for the facility permit.

Performed sizing calculations for a liquid-liquid separator, which was utilized in azeotropic distillation. Performed heat exchanger rating studies to determine capability of the existing overhead condensers and reboilers to meet production requirements. Checked hydraulic capacity of distillation tower packing.

Completed project scoping activities. Performed preliminary equipment sizing, material takeoffs, tie-points and coordination activities. Completed preliminary factored estimate to check the estimate from the engineering contractor.

Client representative to manage the engineering contractor for the project. Oversaw scheduling, cost tracking, and progress reporting activities.

Prepared the lump sum bid packages for the civil and insulation contractors. Prepared bid tabs to ensure competitive pricing.

Checked and tracked project spending against the estimate.

Project was completed on time and $300K under budget.

Other capital projects and process engineering activities:

Functioned as sitewide shutdown coordinator in November 2006. Coordinated capital projects activity ($500K), electrical infrastructure preventative maintenance and overhaul, firewater culvert cleanout as well as freshwater canal dredging activities.

Performed preliminary process design and development of the Aspen simulation and material balance for retrofit of two existing production trains to manufacture para-tert-butyl phenol (PTBP), para-heptyl phenol (PHP), and para-tert-octyl phenol (PTOP). Evaluated distillation tower packing and internals, overhead condensers and reboilers, pumps and existing piping for facility production requirements. Worked with Sulzer Chemtech to optimize sequence of the distillation train.

Retrofit of an existing flare to meet 40 CFR 60.18 regulations. Completed material balance of the process vents and worked with the flare vendor to assemble the retrofit package.

Installation of a sewer line and tie-in to the City of Freeport waste water treatment plant. Worked with the engineering contractor and internal legal department to procure permission from the City and various right of ways. Provided input and review for the civil design of the sewer line outside the plant.

Scoped facilities for a reactor catalyst regeneration project. Completed the material balance of the process vents to provide input to the environmental engineer for permitting. Performed material take-offs and completed the detailed estimate for the capital funding request.

DOW CHEMICAL COMPANY

2000 – 2003 Production Engineer – Allyl Chloride and Telone® Manufacturing

Performed inside operator activities for both plants and the thermal oxidation units during the 2003 operator strike.

Six Sigma Green Belt Certified. Completed a distillation tower optimization project which utilized the MAIC methodology to design an advanced control strategy which reduced the amount of usable product in the waste stream. Result of the optimization project saved Dow over $1 MM per year in yield loss and waste disposal cost.

Optimized operation of vacuum blowers in the Telone plant which resulted in maintenance savings of over $120K per year.

Daily troubleshooting and optimization efforts increased Allyl Chloride and Telone® plants production rates by 20%.

FLUOR

1997 – 2000 Process Engineer

Member of the engineering team to revamp a Marathon 120,000 BPCD heavy crude refinery in Jose, Venezuela. Completed Hysys simulations for the crude and vacuum units and optimized the simulation to analyze the capacity increase. Evaluated heat exchangers, pumps, pipe sizes, and tower trays for increased capacity.

Performed front-end engineering for a 400kTA Petrokemya polyethylene plant in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Completed design of the UNIPOL ethylene purification and catalyst preparation processes licensor packages. Prepared P&IDs, equipment datasheets, and designed the pressure relief system of the catalyst preparation unit. Participated in process hazards review.

Designed offsite and utility systems for a Mobil-Pequiven Joint Venture (MPJV) 400kTA Ethylene Glycol plant in Jose, Venezuela. Completed front-end engineering for an onsite tank farm, caustic dilution unit, and the closed loop cooling water system.
