The Story of My Career

1998 - 2003 College – Travel – University

After leaving High School I embarked upon my Higher Education with a year of travel in-between. I completed a Higher National Diploma in Business and Marketing and was awarded a Merit for the quality of my work. After that 2-year course I travelled to and worked around Australia with 3 of my friends on a Working Holiday Visa. Upon returning I enrolled on a course to convert my HND into a Degree in Business Management and Administration. I qualified with a 2:1 grade which is the 2nd highest possible.

2003 - 2006 Customer Experience Management

Following completion of my Degree I made the transition into employment working in a trainee capacity at first, before assuming full responsibilities as a Customer Experience Manager. During this time, I learned many of the skills and much of the knowledge that to this day forms the foundation of my approach to User Experience Design. As well as successfully practically applying the skills I developed throughout my Higher Education, I also learned and developed new ones whilst working in this capacity.

2006 - 2009 Customer Experience Consultant

After gaining tremendous experience in my role as a Customer Experience Manager, in 2006 I decided to make the move into self-employment by opening my own Consultancy.

In this period, I learned how to be adaptable, flexible, and how to communicate effectively with clarity when working in a new team.

I also developed real-world business skills and knowledge I could now teach to others.

2009 – 2011 Teacher of English as a Foreign Language

Since travelling to Australia, I had gone away on typical 2-week holidays, but the desire for a long adventure had returned to my system.

I decided to Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and proceeded to travel the world teaching children and adults.

I developed the ability to relate to and work with, people from many different backgrounds and circumstances during this time.

I found the work extremely rewarding and enjoyable, and I took great satisfaction from seeing the progress made by my students.

2012 – 2014 Opportunity Centre Manager

Upon my return to the UK, I took my time before accepting an offer to Manage a Community Centre in the heart of one of the most economically deprived areas in the country.

I made a Training and Employment Service the very heart of the centre. We helped those in the community who struggled with modern work applications and cultures to be in a position to apply for roles they were able to perform.

A main feature of the service was to help foreign adults and children settle into the area by providing them with free English lessons on an evening.

I was awarded the prestigious Mayor’s Award for Services to the Community as a result of the difference I made in this role.

2014 – 2016 Front End Development / Web Design / WordPress

Despite the success of the Centre, funding from the Council was withdrawn due to austerity measures, and we were forced to close.

During this time, I taught myself how to function as a front-end developer and found basic work via online freelancer platforms.

At the same time, I also casually taught English via Skype to new members of the community I held my previous role in. I helped them learn the essential words and phrases to settle in as quickly as possible to the community. I created my own lesson plans, and monitored progress and provided motivation.

2016 – Present Remote UX Design Consultant

I currently work part time as a Remote User Experience Design Consultant.

I work online on a freelance basis and my Portfolio Site can be found here:

www.remoteuxd.com

I basically help businesses to either improve the current experience their users are having, or design the experience from the start if they do not already have one.

The End (what next?)

That brings you up to date and to the end of my resume career story.

I am currently looking for a role as a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language where I can live and work in Thailand. I am currently in Koh Phangan, and I have been here for 2 months. Thai culture really interests me, and I feel at home in Thailand. Therefore, I know ‘culture shock’ would not be a problem at all! J I would love to be able to teach and stay here for the longer term.

I love to teach and to have a positive impact on my students lives. I would be happy to teach children or adults. I have a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and I take great satisfaction from seeing my students progress.

Thank you for the time you have taken to consider me as an applicant, I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Steven Cook
