Jammu and Kashmir bank is the largest sole Limited company in state of J&K with almost 500 plus branches throughout India
Technical division of bank has been divided into two sections. One section is working on Finacle banking software which is a GUI up-gradation of BANKS2000 software from Infosys India Ltd. Operating system is Sun Solaris. Database application (RDBMS) oracle 9i. Extensive use of java applets is made in Finacle.
Other section is using BANKS2000 software on UNIX platform with oracle 8i as RDBMS.

Since the bank is presently having two sections that is of centralized database and distributed database, my job too falls in these two sections
IN DISTRIBUTED SYSTEM
It covers whole spectrum starting from initial set up of a computerized branch from manual one to its complete maintenance and support. The major areas of support and maintenance are as under:
1.Providing solution to online queries which may be in form of a simple SELECT command or else a complete PL/SQL procedure may be required. The queries mostly focus around retrieval of data in a particular format.
2.Incremental export backup of database or a part of it(Important tables or an index).The export backups are helpful in database monitoring as well as provide a means of backup.
3.Database restoration
Case 1(Oracle data block corruption)
i.Due to abnormal power failure the database may get corrupted.
ii.We provide archival log recovery to bring database in its correct form upto the point at which the failure had occurred.
iii.Incase of index corruption dropping and recreating of index is used.
Case 2 (Time based recovery)
At times it becomes important to get database back to a particular point.We use the time base recovery method to accomplish this task.
4.Database Tuning with appropriate values to avoid any bottlenecks.
The tuning of ORACLE performance parameters(DB BLOCK SIZE,DB BLOCK BUFFERS,SHARED POOL SIZE) need to be adjusted to obtain better system throughput. Creation and maintenance of oracle support files viz control and log files.
5.Frequent space problems at site. This may involve both system space problem and database space problem.
6.Monitoring the overall system performance, removal of temporary files, archival log files removal at constant interval.
6.Tuning the system semaphore and shared memory segments for better throughput.
Tuning of system parameters (SEMAPHORE PARAMETERS) to support ORACLE SGA. The semaphore parameters are tuned properly depending upon the database size and maximum throughput required.
8.Authentication Authorization and Accounting on Solaris and UNIX systems.
1.Creation of groups and users on system level and granting the privileges to them(Users ob Unix and Solaris).
2.Segregation of different users in different groups depending upon the type of job each users is assigned.
3.Enabling of the anywhere and ATM services at various sites.This mainly involves enabling these services on the system,providing all the necessary scripts for these two services as well as creation of users both at system level and database level who can use this service.
9.Customization and parameterization of Banking software.
10.The banking software provided by the Infosys India Ltd (i.e BANCS 2000) needs to be customized and parameterized as per the requirement of our bank. All the queries from various nodal branches needs to be considered during its customization and parameterization.
11.Installation and support for new banking application or any other software for banking purpose.
12.Design and Development of scripts (Shell) as per the required reports (like GL, advance reports, daybook etc.)
IN CENTRALIZED SYSTEM
Since database is centralized the job is more confined to database backup, database recovery and also synchronization of all the nodes.

INTERCONNECTIVITY BETWEEN LINUX AND WINDOWS
The project dealt with the interconnectivity between two different operating systems. The basic concept was to establish network between two heterogeneous operating systems and carry out functions like remote procedure calls, file transfers and like.The project was designed using client server model with each request being initiated by the client side.
File transfer involved transfer of files from one system to another (i.e a send message on one end resulted in file being transferred to another end. Both single and multiple files could be transferred.
Remote procedure call was to accomplish a task by calling a function on remote machine. Use of functions called server stubs and client stubs were made.
Platform and programming language used.
This project was developed by using C language as the programming language.To support socket programming on Linux Berkely sockets were used. On windows WINSOCK was used to enable socket programming.
