Responsibilities as a NDT Level-III

1. Responsible for establishing Techniques, Interpreting Codes, and Designating the Test Method and Technique to be used. Make NDT procedures for specific requirements of jobs and submit it to client for his approval before carrying out NDT.

2. Make site visits to understand the NDT requirement for the job in order to make an appropriate NDT procedure and also for cost estimation and quotation.

3. Conduct periodic refresher courses in NDT methods for subordinates to keep them in conjunction with latest developments in NDT.

4. Training & Certification of subordinates/beginners as NDT Level-I or II in RT, MT & PT methods as per recommended practice SNT-TC-1A document.

5. Interact with client and his Authorised Inspector in case of any unexpected deviation is needed from the approved procedure/written document while practically doing NDT. Re-document the deviation and get prior approval of the client for the

deviation.

6. Build a trust with different Authorized Inspectors/Clients by continuously enhancing the quality of service provided by the firm for their continuous patronage.

Responsibilities as a Radiation Safety Officer

1. Organize a radiation protection programme (RPP) appropriate for the radiation facility to ensure that safe work practices are

followed by the radiographers and trainees.

2. Carry out routine measurement and analysis on radiation and

radioactivity levels around radiation installation and maintain records.

3. Inform in writing to the licensee or any other regulatory body about any safety related incident.

4. Investigate any situation that could lead to potential exposures/abnormal exposures and report findings to the

employer, licensee. Suggest appropriate actions to prevent

recurrences.

5. Advice the employer regarding the necessary steps aimed at ensuring that the terms & conditions of the licence issued by the competent authority, are adhered to; the safe storage and movement of radioactive material within the radiation installation.

6. Ensure that personnel monitoring devices are provided to radiation workers in the facility and are used as required.

7. Monitoring instruments are calibrated periodically and calibration records are maintained.

8. Tests and Maintenance schedules for safety related components and systems are in accordance with the instruction manual of the facility.

9. All operational and safety functions of the facility are in order prior to restarting the facility each time after servicing and repair.

10. Assist the employer in the safe disposal of radioactive wastes.

11. Develop suitable emergency response plans to deal with accident situations and maintain emergency preparedness.

Conduct emergency drills to ensure effectiveness of emergency response plans.

12. Obtain regulatory consent for source loading/unloading, modifications to the design and for any operation not originally authorized by the competent authority.

13. Furnish to the licensee and the competent Authority the

periodic reports on safety status of the radiation installation.

14. Maintain servicing, operation log books, QA and other safety records.

J. Feb. 1996 to Jan.1997 – Employed as Management Trainee/Site-In-Charge (RT Level-II) with M/s. Rank Radiographic Testing Pvt. Ltd., Thane. Got certified

from BARC as RT-Level-II. Also, got certified as Level-II in MT, PT & UT methods.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Perform independently NDT (RT, MT, PT & UT) operations as per approved procedure/written document, observe the indications, interpret and evaluate the observations and make Test Reports.

2. Observe the safety of Radiation Equipments as per stipulated conditions laid down by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Govt. Of India for the safe operations of the equipments, radiation detection equipments, personnel monitoring units etc. Check and

maintain log book for the use of Radiation equipments, monitor and guide RT-Level-I and trainees in routine jobs.

3. Review the test reports of NDT performed before submission to clients. Interact with client and his Authorized Inspector for any clarification needed in the interpreted and evaluated test reports and furnish more information needed about the procedure of performing the particular NDT method.

4. Visit clients place and understand his NDT needs. Gather information needed for making NDT procedure and estimate the cost for making a quote.

5. Understand the different Codes of Manufacture like ASME Sec.VIII Div.1 & 2, ASME Sec.III- NA to NF, BS 5500, EN/ADM, AWS, API etc. and their recommendations for NDT with

Acceptance Standards so that appropriate interpretation and evaluation can be done for various jobs. Refer to reference

radiographs like ASTM-446, 186, 272, 192, 310 (for castings

radiography) etc. for ease of evaluation and most appropriate reporting.

K.Feb.1995 to Jan.1996 – Employed as Management Trainee/Asst. Technician in Radiography Testing (RT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Penetrant Testing(PT) & Ultrasonic Testing (UT) NDT Methods. Got certified as RT Level-I from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Govt. Of India.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist Senior Technicians in performing the stipulated NDT method as per approved procedure/written practice documents.

2. Worked as a Radiographer (RT Level-I) in attending RT of pressure vessels, pipe lines, castings etc. The responsibility was to take RT as per clients offer list in the factory/site premises, process the radiographs in a dark room, and make things ready for further interpretation and evaluation.
