Work Experience

Exelis, Rochester, NY September 2015- November 2015

Engineering Contractor

Wrote a Verification Plan for an FPGA on one of the company's data measurement platforms.

Quality Vision International, Rochester, NY December 2013- August 2014

Engineering Contractor

Participated in a rapid prototyping project to supplement hardware based on a legacy TMS320C2407 DSP with a 1 GHz ARM Cortex processor. Successfully implemented the VHDL portion of the new design to accommodate both processors using Xilinx and Actel FPGAs. Developed ARM code in C, DSP code in assembly, and PC code in C++.

University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics, Rochester, NY September 2010 – 2012

Engineering Contractor

Test and development of electronic systems designed to support the laser experiments. Tasks include C programming under Linux, FPGA development, motor control development, and test design and technician activities.

Harley School, Rochester, NY June 2010

Substitute Teacher

Taught Middle School French

Dalanco Spry, Rochester, NY 1986 – June 2013

Owner

Designed, developed and marketed a line of DSP and FPGA based computer boards and software (both development and applications) for general analog and digital I/O applications. The most recent products may be seen at http://www.dalanco.com. Sales since 1986 are about $1 million.

oDesigned PCI, PC/104, and ISA bus boards for signal processing and data acquisition applications. boards incorporated DSP, FPGA, and mixed analog-digital components. The PCI and PC/104 boards are based on the TMS320C32 floating point processor. The ISA boards are based on fixed point processors.

oWrote development software for the boards, including drivers, assemblers, debuggers, and loaders.

oWrote data acquisition and playback and Flash based bootup software for the boards, employing C and assembly language.

Bridgekey Corp., Rochester, NY 2005 – 2009

Engineer

Designed, developed, and brought up complex board level products. Examples:

oDesigned 400 MHz PowerQUICC based board with multiple I/O channels, serial, fiber, Ethernet, back-plane communications and time inputs. Wrote C code for on-board Microchip PIC processor to decode input IRIG-B time code signals. Configured U-boot boot-loader to operate on the board. Wrote C test code to exercise board functions.

oDesigned dual CPU (ARM 7 + ARM 9) based industrial monitor logic board using schematic entry. Implemented the RedBoot loader and embedded Linux builds to function with the CPU and Flash types in this design. Wrote boot-loader for the TI ARM 7. Wrote data logger and serial communications applications for the Cirrus ARM 9.

oImplemented lock-in amplifier algorithm in software to determine gas concentrations from photo-acoustic measurement data. Ran tests to confirm the efficacy of this technique.

DTC Communications Nashua, NH 2004 – 2005

Engineer

Developed FPGA and DSP software for communications applications.

Implemented encoding algorithms, MAC, and a programmable UART in a Virtex II FPGA. Wrote communications algorithms for a software based C4FM P25 compliant receiver. Implemented the entire algorithm chain from digital demodulation to decoding to audio in DSP software. Target was a TI OMAP processor.

ST Research, Newington, VA 1984 – 1986

Consultant

Wrote software (both interface and DSP) that identified signal types for the company's RF receiver product. Used TI TMS320 Assembly Language and wrote C language programs on a UNIX based VAX minicomputer.

Education

BS, Physics, McGill University, Montreal, Canada

MS, Physics, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI
