Finite Element Method in Automotive Structure Design
• Determination of Tip Deflection and The Maximum Stress of a Steering Column Support Beam: Analyzed the stresses on two different steering column beam designs in different conditions
• Modal Analysis: Identified the global modes of vibration for a given Aluminum space frame structure and improved its natural frequency using Hypermesh and Optistruct
• Bending and Torsional stiffness analysis: Improved the bending and torsional stiffness of an Aluminum space frame and compared the percentage weight change to the original design using Hypermesh Vehicle Ergonomics and packaging: Team leader
• Evaluation of Driver Package: Measured, analyzed and compared driver ingress, egress and other driver package dimensions to SAE guidelines and anthropometry data, Evaluation of interior driver packaging was done based on subjective judgements of different percentile drivers.
• Evaluation of controls and displays: conducted an ergonomic Evaluation of some important controls and displays located on the driver’s door, instrument panel and steering column of a recent production vehicle, suggestions were made for improvements according to the identified ergonomic needs.
• Redesigned controls & displays on center stack: Evaluated the customer usability issues and redesigned the controls and displays in the center stack of ford fusion, by benchmarking and making a prototype. Subjective evaluation was conducted for validating the new design proper documentation was done
• Field of view analysis (A pillar): Analyzed ‘A’ pillar obstruction in driver’s forward field of view for various car segments. Suggested an idea of placing cameras at the A pillars and sensors at front bumpers which gets activated while taking turns and displays on Instrument cluster Vehicle Integration
• Benchmarking and preliminary design specifications: Conducted a Detailed bench-marking and Pugh analysis of competitor vehicles by tabulating the requirements and data collection for developing a best in class vehicle and implementing “voice of customer” in new product
• Quality Function Deployment (QFD): Cascaded the customer and vehicle attributes into functional and design requirements to highlight the key functional specification for the system development by QFD.
• Project planning: Business plan development, project planning, cost analysis & project timeline in reference with systems engineering V-model was done
• Vehicle packaging: Detailed packaging and conceptual design of major sub systems of an automobile like the engine, battery system, exhaust system, driver packaging, fuel tank was done Human Machine Interface
• User Interface Flow Development: Designed a mockup of new interface used in Ford focus using PowerPoint and developed HMI logic for Bluetooth screen and other features
• Design Evaluation: Conducted a usability evaluation on the Ford Focus 2013 MY to find the unfriendly designs of infotainment. FMEA, DVP&R, Task analysis was performed for operability, visibility, understandability and reachability of the system and provided possible improvements SUJITH NAKKA
