Fluid Dynamics Projects:

• Strategic Petroleum Reserve Cavern Mixing Program, Developed part of experimental/theoretical model in a team, to parameterize the mixing process of crude oil which occurs during degassing of oil in large underground caverns with strategic petroleum reserve (SPR). Employed particle image velocimetry and laser induced dye visualization to map the flow structures and velocity/vorticity fields from which the frequency of jet switching, mean flow, turbulence characteristics were inferred. Performed dimensional analysis and developed scaling laws to extrapolate laboratory observations to SPR flow mixing situations. (This project was financially supported by Sandia National Laboratories)

• Physics-based Modeling of Generation of Synthetic Ship Stern Wake, Conducted physical scaled experiments to identify dominant processes responsible for thermal wake generation. Performed in-depth data analysis. Participated in formulation some part of theoretical model to quantify the phenomenon of ship’s propeller and hull mixing of underlying cold water at the ocean surface. Employed sensitive thermal imaging technique to measure water surface temperature. Verified the experimental result with the model predictions. (This project was financially supported by Raytheon/Office of Naval Research)

• Thermal/hydrodynamic characteristics of submerged heated jet, Proposed experimental model to investigate flow induced at the surface of a water body by a submerged heated horizontal turbulent jet. Conducted experiments with different jet Reynolds numbers keeping jet nozzle diameter fixed and varying the depth of the jet beneath the free surface. Employed particle image velocimetry to measure the near-surface horizontal velocity field and highly sensitive infrared camera to capture surface temperature. (This project was financially supported by Office of Naval Research) Publications:
