After the event was finished or the timeframe on when the rental was completed, we would go back to each customer and tear down and load the truck back up and return to the shop and unload all supplies and materials and stock them in the warehouse. This job was mostly a hard labor type job. Left this job at the end of the summer - seasonal work.

2007 - 2008 Co-Part: Yard Manager/Receiver: Started as yard laborer charging car batteries and picking up the yard of debris. I was promoted to yard manager where I would do yard requests to prep for auction and drive or radio them to be picked up for auction. Shortly thereafter I was promoted to Receiver which involved my taking pictures of all new vehicles we received as well as entered them into the computer system by the VIN so titles could be charged over for auction. Co-part opened a new shop in Birmingham which decreased our business and Co-part here locally had to lay off 4 employees, which included me.

2008 – Present: Construction.

Jeff Copeland/Mike Click: (approx. 3 years) This was my first carpentry job, learning the foundation of carpentry work. Worked several residential properties and businesses to include the Westin Hotel, wherein myself and a coworker put in all the crown molding in their banquet rooms. Skills I acquired were laying wood floors, plumbing throughout residences, renovations and additions to residential properties, cabinetry, windows, tiling, building pho beams, crown molding and base trim, furniture, and shelving.

Self-employed with Shayne Hutchins: While working for Jeff Copeland/Mike Click my co-worker Shayne Hutchins and I branched out to start our own business. During this time we built furniture, cabinets, crown molding, siding, wood flooring, wood stairs, dry wall, door frames, painting, tiling, and general construction. Met with clients to go over the job, determining the supplies and labor and provide a quote to the client. Kept account of the finances/expenditures. Ensured during the job that the work was on schedule so not to go over the number of hours that was given to the client. All jobs were completed on time and exceeded the client’s expectations.

Andy Gulliuon: Being self-employed business became very slow so I went to work for Andy Gulliuon doing the same duties as listed above as a subcontractor. During all of these jobs I worked with materials such as wood, metal, plastic, fiberglass, drywall, and composites. Utilized chisels, planes, saws, drills, and sanders to repair and erect structures. Joined these materials with certain style joints or mitered angles, nails, screws, staples, and adhesives. Worked on top of scaffolding, ladders, and the top beams of buildings. As a carpenter I have attention to detail, the math skills in order to perform my daily job duties along with problem solving skills. Not every job is the same and as a carpenter I need to be able to adjust plans to compensate for any environmental issues that come up. Before starting a project I prepare the layout of the project, estimate height, width, length, and other proportions, select the materials I will need for the project, check work along the way to ensure it’s up to code and specifications. In working these projects I have slowly acquired the following tools in order to be fully prepared for the job. I have a tool belt with a framing hammer, metal speed square, combination screw driver, spirit levels, framing level, utility knife, marking device, chisels, cat’s paw, carpenter square, router, table saw, power drill, orbital sander, circular saw, and compound miter saw. At this time I work part-time with Andy Gulliuon Design and Renovations as I have started going back to college to better advance myself.

Creative Containment: During the summer time to keep money in hand and the family took care of I went to work at my friend’s fence company. I worked from April 2017-August 2017 when schools fall semester started. My job description was to load new materials each morning as well as making sure all tools and supplies needed are on the truck. The first day normally would involve taking and setting 4x4 posts. Digging 2ft deep holes to set 4x4 and one or two 6x6 posts with concrete. I’d drive to get a couple scoops of gravel fill a wheel barrow and cut and set each post for the new fence. The second day I’d be nailing 2x4’s and the picket boards. The end of each fence would need an arch cut between posts or a freeze board at the top. This job took a lot of concentration and organization to get the jobs done. I also was working with a Spanish language. My day would start at 7 and would end around 5 in the afternoon. To dig the holes in the ground we used a two men ground auger. The holes were 2ft deep and filled with concrete. The next day we’d install each panel, and cut the top. It was very tough working in the summer sun with the heat and humidity, but each day felt like a victory with satisfying results and a great workout. I will continue to work for Patrick during the school year until I find a job that better fits where I’m trying to get my degree in and a nice benefit package.
