Professional Summary
I managed the technical program for 14 steel drum manufacturing plants in North America. For two years, I was Plant Manager running a plant with a workforce that varied between 50 and 100 employees seasonally. I’m an expert in quality systems, lean manufacturing, environmental and Dept. of Transportation regulations, assisting manufacturing plants world-wide with their processes, working with customers to develop the best package for their product and working with suppliers to get the best materials for manufacturing. This was accomplished through changes in manufacturing processes, product development and knowledge of requirements for packaging food, hazardous materials and other ladings.
Professional Expertise
Quality Systems, root cause problem solving, complaint resolution
Safety – plant inspections assuring the safety of employees
UN Regulatory Compliance – requirements and testing
Environmental Compliance – air, water and hazardous waste
Lean Manufacturing – optimizing cycle times, OEE
Interior and exterior coatings – performance and regulatory compliance
Coatings applications – Nordson (airless), Kremlin (air assisted airless), rollercoating with a thorough knowledge of optimizing transfer efficiencies utilizing best practices for set up and application
Oven Evaluation – determining the necessary metal temperatures to properly cure paints and linings
Lining requirements – product resistance, FDA conformance and performance
Drum performance – UN performance requirements and limitations, unlined (rust prevention), lined, pressure limits, vacuum limits, temperature limits
Forming steel – properties, surface condition, lubrication
Seaming – triple or double, heavy or light gauge
Tinplating drums – tinplating shells and discs for manufacturing drums
Galvanized drum manufacturing - preparation of bodies and flame spraying to remetallize the welded seam
Professional Experience
Steel Drum Manufacturing 1986 to 2014 – Technical Director - Steel
Greif 1997 to 2014
Assisted all 13 (now) North American plants with manufacturing, UN and environmental compliance
Assistance to sales, customers and presentations to major customers, Coca Cola, Dow Chemical, Chevron, Exxon, Huntsman, Univar to name a few.
Instrumental in the development and installation of Clean Green steel washers in Houston and Shanghai, this system uses no chemicals, just hot water, brushes and ultracentrifuges.
Recent installation of new painting systems in Houston (Nordson), New Orleans (Kremlin) and Stoney Creek, ON (Kremlin). The Stoney Creek system paints all diameters with the drums vertical.
Participated in the development and installation of a 900 drum / hr line in Houston
Rebuilt large and small drum lines in Bladenboro, NC.
Future Projects
Developing an electrostatic lubrication system, that lubricates steel on the coil line and does not require cleaning before painting or lining.
Use infrared ovens that can turn on and off in seconds, saving significant amounts of fuel.
Ultraviolet cured linings that can be cured in seconds without ovens.
Plating Technician, Quality Assurance Manager, Plant Manager - Rheem, NAMPAC 1986 to 1997
Developed quality system, became ISO 9000 registered, maintained all environmental compliance
Product development 2 patents – high pressure drum, integral sealed drum, helical cooling drum, matte tinplate, vinyl lining for foods.
Worked closely with food processors throughout California assisting with hot fill and aseptic packaging in tinplated drums and with aseptic packing in bags in drums.
Wine Chemist – Geyser Peak 1984 - 1986
Wine analysis from crush to finished wine
Bottling
Aseptic bag in box wines
Coatings Chemist
Cook Paint and Varnish 1981 – 1984
Supervised QC lab
Manufactured coil coatings, polyester gel coats, laminating resins and polyurethane foam
Dexter Midland 1975 – 1981
Formulated beer and beverage can coatings
Formulated closure coatings mainly for bottles and jars
De Soto 1973 – 1975
Lab Technician – formulating beer and beverage can coatings
Education
Last school, California State University Stanislaus, majoring in Chemistry (108 transferrable semester hours). Mainly night school while working from 1973 to 1996, taking courses pertinent to my jobs, 150 semester hours at 6 different colleges
