PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
SSL (SPACE SYSTEMS/LORAL), Palo Alto, CA 2006 - 2017
Sr. Engineering Specialist / Engineering Lead (2010 – 2017)
Directed and managed mechanical solutions for commercial satellite systems complying with customer and SSL cross-functional subsystem requirements. Provided technical support for customer from contract negotiations through satellite end-of-life.
• Developed Preliminary and Critical Design Review (PDR, CDR) packages of satellite Thermal Subsystem, defining all requirements and on-orbit flight predictions.
• Provided on-site training in Hong Kong to educate customers about subsystems of their spacecraft, instilling confidence in their operational duties through end of 15-20yr spacecraft lifetime.
• Planned/executed successful Spacecraft Thermal Vacuum (SCTV) tests of satellite systems, validating mechanical design of the spacecraft and implement changes if needed.
• Established design guidelines of antenna systems, saving up to 80hrs of analysis time by eliminating iterative case studies.
• Provided subsystem support in Mission Control, resulting in 5 successful SSL satellite launch campaigns (AsiaSat 5, AsiaSat 7, AsiaSat 8, Satmex 8, Echostar XIX).
• Created Thermal Subsystem Satellite Orbital Operations Handbooks for AsiaSat, Satmex, and Echostar customers, providing guidelines to re-program spacecraft thermal telemetry.
• Created complete Generic Thermal Systems Analysis Process, streamlining the spacecraft design process by eliminating iterative analysis amongst the cross-functional teams.
Thermal Analyst (2006 –2010)
Performed unit- and system-level thermal analyses of commercial satellites for test and flight.
• Designed and fabricated mockup of high power antenna feed for use in SCTV test, verifying the mechanical design of the feed interface without compromising integrity of final flight installation.
• Developed and implemented hardware solutions for IntelSat-19 satellite, simultaneously satisfying requirements of various subsystems (Thermal, Structural, Antenna, and Payload).
• Provided CAD model and analysis of satellite to launch vehicle providers (ILS Proton, SpaceX, Ariane), validating the subsystem design within the launch vehicle during the mission.
L-3 COMMUNICATIONS, Menlo Park, CA 2004 - 2006
Mechanical/Thermal Engineer
Developed mechanical and thermal solutions for Advanced Hawkeye E-2D (AHE) Antenna and Rotary Coupler.
• Formulated Qualification, and Acceptance Test Procedures for AHE program, satisfying L-3 system test guidelines and Northrop Grumman Corporation and US Naval Air requirements.
• Supervised development of flexible coax RF aircraft transmission lines, including mechanical test fixtures, ensuring mechanical design provided proper airflow for optimal RF performance.
• Performed flow and pressure drop tests in C130 aircraft, providing significant baseline data for tests on AHE rotary coupler using increased RF power levels.
• Redesigned compressed air system at L-3 test facility to provide clean, dry, heated air to test setup, confirming use of heritage mechanical solution with significantly higher RF power levels.
ROCKWELL COLLINS, San Jose, CA 2002 - 2004
Mechanical/Thermal Engineer
Developed thermal and mechanical solutions for electronic display systems in Canadian and Australian F/A-18 as per Boeing, Northrop Grumman Canada Corporation and military specifications.
• Performed airflow tests on stereo-lithographic mockups and first article systems, verifying predictions of preliminary analyses.
• Managed suppliers in developing unique quick disconnect video/optics cable on Comanche helmet, simultaneously satisfying strict Mil-Spec standards, US Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory and Sikorsky requirements.
HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY, Cupertino, CA 2000 - 2002
Mechanical/Thermal Engineer, Product Design
Analyzed, implemented, and delivered low cost thermal solutions for high-end rack optimized servers and low-end pedestal products incorporating cross-functional system requirements.
• Evaluated individual server performance in enclosed racks within Data Center environment, providing optimal thermal solutions that ensured 99.99% system performance.
• Tracked mechanical solutions with Intel processor roadmaps, delivering robust server performance for current and future Intel processor releases.
• Managed overseas suppliers to develop active and passive heat sink technologies, offering cost–effective solutions with maximum performance.
• Collaborated with hardware, software, electrical, mechanical, and thermal teams, developing optimized and cost-efficient solutions for entire product lifetimes.
• Established installation and rework guidelines for heat sink assemblies at manufacturing and customer sites, eliminating additional rework and/or waste during production or product upgrade.
