EXPERIENCE

Work experience:

Alberta Road Services

Sales and paving of driveways June 2016 – August 2016

Prior to leaving for university I worked as a door-to-door salesman at a construction company. In my sales role, I was successful at cold calling people and developing sales leads. I learned how to diagnose customer needs and provide them with various options.

While not working sales, I was occasionally asked to assist with the paving of driveways. In this role I learned how to work with others and follow directions from others to get the job done. This role also taught me a broad range of hands on skills in the field of construction.

Staples

Copy Centre Associate February 2015 – June 2016

As a copy centre associate at Staples I was given the opportunity to develop my technological skills. More specifically: basic editing of documents and photos with Adobe, advanced understanding of Microsoft PowerPoint and Word, understand how to use and repair complex printing and photocopying machines (and other print tools), and quickly navigate an advanced POS system.

I learned how to assess customers’ needs and suggest various options to provide them with the most tailored experience possible.

At busy times I learned how to work with my colleagues to keep up with copy and print orders while still providing excellent customer service.

Boathouse (Chinook mall)

Sales Associate February 2014 – February 2015

Over the course of my year at Boathouse I developed my confidence and customer service skills and greatly refined my ability to provide the customer with not only what they came for, but also provide them with recommendations for other products and promotions within the store.

With my experience I was also expected to train and work with new employees to develop their skills.

Additionally, I was trained to use a Point of Sale system and handle cash.

Heritage Park

Cook and Dishwasher June 2013 – October 2013

As a cook I was given the opportunity to run a small kitchen on my own in a very fast pace environment. This developed my ability to work efficiently and effectively without the support of others.

As a dishwasher I worked in a larger kitchen and, though I washed all the dishes myself, I learned how to effectively communicate with others in a work environment.

Volunteer experience:

Seiwakai Karate Club

2012 – 2016

Through hard work and training, I achieved a black belt in Karate at the age of 17. As a senior member in the club, I was expected to help out more with the training of my club’s lower belts. This experience helped me better understand how to train and work with individuals of various ages and abilities. In my volunteering I taught not only the techniques of karate, but also the basic Japanese terminology associated.

S-Trip

July 2016

On my high school graduation trip to the Dominican Republic, I was given the opportunity to volunteer in a small community near Punta Cana. My classmates and I assisted with the clean up of the community as well as with the development of a community centre in a very poor neighbourhood.

This taught me the value of volunteer work and the impact that individuals can have on society.

Projects abroad – medical internship

May 2017

Earlier this summer I travelled to Kathmandu, Nepal for three weeks to work as an intern in a hospital. In this role I shadowed doctors as they treated patients, and I also participated in two community outreaches where I assisted in basic health check-ups for children, and taught students basic first aid techniques.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

Alberta Education High School Diploma

Honour roll student

Currently completing Bachelor of Human Kinetics at UBC

In addition to learning about the physiology of human activity, I am also learning about how individuals are motivated to achieve goals and what I can do to assist them.

I have also developed a working understanding of Microsoft Excel.

Professional Bartending Training Course – Fine Art Bartending School

In this course I learned how to make a wide variety of cocktails and also developed an understanding of beer and wine selection
