I work with non-English speaking patients in hospitals, physician's offices, clinics, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes and mental health clinics. I act as conduit between patients and medical professionals by listening to the professional and orally translating information into a patient's native language in layman's terms. Then I translate the patient's response back to the professional, using proper medical terminology. I may translate such information as the reason for a medical visit, past medical history, and family medical history, as well as explaining medical and surgical procedures, giving medical care instructions, providing drug information and scheduling follow-up appointments. During the visit, cultural misunderstandings between a professional and patient may occur. I must anticipate these events and try to avoid them. I am also privy to sensitive information, so they must maintain patient confidentiality always.
Duties include serving the patients and staff and supporting the operations of the department, in the consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes. Relaying medical information between speakers of two different languages in compliance with all office and health center policies and procedures, particularly relating to patient confidentiality and informed consent and assists department with on-the-job training. Duties also include but are not limited to helping facilitate successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse consumers, explaining health center resources, office protocols, and limitations to clinicians and patients. Serving as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers to contribute to successful outcomes, performing duties in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation while adhering to health center policies on customer relations and hospitality. Other duties include supporting the health center operations by answering the phone, taking requests, calling patients to confirm appointments, documenting encounters with the electronic patient management system and electronic health record, verifying and scheduling future appointments when necessary, and general troubleshooting, filing and photocopying.
