SUMMARY

Mechanical engineer (PhD) with several years of research experience in experimental and computational fluid dynam- ics, mathematical modeling, numerical methods, as well as chemical process design and scaleup. RESIDENCY STATUS: Permanent Resident of the USA since 10/2016. PERSONALWEBSITE: https://sites.google.com/view/surajdeshpande/home EDUCATION

PhD Mechanical Engineering, University of Wisconsin, Madison (07/2014) Thesis: A computational study of multiphase flows

M.S. Mechanical Engineering, University of Wisconsin, Madison (06/2010) Thesis: Study of air entrainment by a shallow angle plunging jet B.E. Mechanical Engineering, University of Pune (06/2006) Thesis: CFD analysis of horizontal rectangular fin array EXPERIENCE

Senior Engineer, Core R&D, The Dow Chemical Company (08/2014 - present)

Led several research efforts in order to meet our safety, sustainability, manufacturing and innovation goals.

Developed efficient manufacturing processes for multiphase dispersions such as slurries, emulsions, foams, and sprays. Designed scale-up strategies for applications involving stirred tanks reactors, bubble columns, fixed bed reactors, and inline static mixers.

Research documented in 20+ high-quality internal technical reports.

External scientific engagement:

1 published journal article (Chem. Eng. Sci, 2017, featured on the coverpage); 7 conference presentations as professional researcher at Dow Serving as technical reviewer for Chem. Eng. Sci., AIAA, MANO, and SAE journals. Research Assistant, University of Wisconsin, Madison (09/2008-06/2014)

Atomization: Extended the understanding of physics of turbulent atomization, by employing high-fidelity CFD simulations as well as multiphase linear stability analysis. Successfully isolated the influence of liquid properties, nozzle design, and ambient conditions on atomization, droplet formation, and spray transport.

Plunging Jets: Discovered a periodic mode of air entrainment when a liquid jet plunges into a liquid pool at shallow angles. Research applicable to understanding the signatures of bubbly wakes behind water-jet propelled naval ships. Mathematical model developed, which relates the periodicity to Froude number.

Sprays in Crossflow: The mechanism of spray drift explained in terms of drag force and competition between the crossflow and the spray driven air jet.

Verification & Validation (V&V): Analyzed the algorithm and numerical performance of interFoam, an open source multiphase flow solver, and demonstrated its applicability to various free-surface flows. Suraj S. Deshpande Page 2

Product Engineer, Honeywell Automation India Ltd. (08/2006 - 05/2008)

Managed a team of engineers in assembling and testing a QCS paper scanner.

Developed butterfly valve and actuator for the ECS group of Honeywell. Intern, Fluent India Pvt. Ltd. (06/2005 - 07/2005)

Integrated meshing, CFD solution and postprocessing for four CFD exercises. These exercises were to be later distributed with the academic software, FlowLab.
