EDUCATION

Southern Methodist University Dallas, TX

Master of Science Data Science – GPA 3.86 December 2016

Course work in statistics, machine learning, data mining, information visualization, data security and storage, and economics.

Statistics primarily in SAS with R exposure.

Data mining using python with an emphasis on Pandas and scikit-learn. As part of a data mining lab team, executed a linear regression model to determine if network connectivity data contained sufficient information to determine if a connection is a normal connection or a network attack. A follow-on analysis was conducted using logistic regression to classify the network attack type. Additional projects covered principle component analysis, association rule mining, clustering, and document classification

Most classes were in part or in whole collaborative efforts during projects, exams, and papers. Team efforts provided a unique opportunity to mentor fellow students in software development and professional work product while leveraging a diverse talent pool.

Used class completion surveys and direct feedback to provide analysis of class and overall program issues for both content and presentation. This resulted in several course and program changes including use of peer-review for projects and inclusion of additional R lectures.

Suggested and will develop a larger ‘Data Science Ecosystem’ course for students to understand the breadth and depth of the applications, techniques, and libraries available to clean, analyze, and present common data science tasks.

Southern Methodist University Dallas, TX

Juris Doctorate May 2008

Course work included general law such as torts, contracts, and remedies.

Focused electives on intellectual property

All course work emphasized excellent written communication while several included oral communication.

University of Texas at Dallas Richardson, TX

Master of Science Applied Cognition and Neuroscience – GPA 3.57

Coursework included artificial intelligence, brain systems, cognition, memory, natural language processing, human-computer interaction

University of Texas at Dallas Richardson, TX

Bachelor of Science Cognitive Science – GPA 3.53

Computer science emphasis with classwork in neural networks and natural language processing

EXPERIENCE

Raytheon 1999 - present

Senior Software Engineer

Desktop application developer with extensive experience in Java and mobile development in Android. Projects have ranged from sole developer research efforts to rapid prototype designs for mobile tactical handsets to maintaining and enhancing a decades-long code base.

Broad task exposure in all areas of the Model, View, Controller paradigm, including user interface development, back end processing and data flows. Designed, Coded, Tested REST web services. Familiar with integrating third-party products into developed application code through the use of FOSS and COTS APIs. Comfortable operating in an agile development environment using industry norms such as test driven development to provide stable, extensible solutions. Adaptable to a wide range of requirement environments including self-defined requirements to contract driven requirements

Innovative, created key capabilities for a tactical mobile handset including a structured message tool for rapid communication and bi-directional message parser for network communications. Work resulted in rapid integration of handset into enterprise communication architecture. Championed the use of document-defined, task-oriented user interfaces which reduced development time by seventy-five percent.

Created comprehensive desktop and mobile applications for intelligence sharing; efforts lead to patent #8,156,133 (Modifying an electronic graphics file to be searchable according to annotation information). Applications were well received during war-fighter demonstrations and training.

Full ownership of development effort including requirements analysis, design, code, and test.

Rapidly adapts to shifting technology. Moved from building thick clients using Java/Swing to creating mobile tactical applications in android and then onto creating web-based user interfaces with the GTW toolkit.

During development pause, championed a move from stove-pipe workflows to cross-team, ad-hoc workflows. Move was adopted by program management and led to an increase in team productivity.

Mentored team members on a diverse set of topics including best practices for software development and professional growth. Advocate for continuous learning opportunities.

Lockheed-Martin 1998 - 1999

Associate Software Engineer

Java and C++ application developer in the Artificial Intelligence group at the Advanced Technology Lab.

United States Navy 1988- 1993

Electronic Warfare Technician

Work-center supervisor responsible for system maintenance and operations.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Coursera

Early explorer of Coursera. Since 2013 taken multiple classes in machine learning, data mining, R, and statistics offered by leading schools such as Stanford, John Hopkins, and University of Washington.

Udemy

Since graduation, continued knowledge development with targeted coursework in the area of Spark, D3, and currently deep learning.

VOLUNTEER

United Way Dallas, TX

Community Grant Review Board 2012

Reviewed grant requests from community organizations; visited with grant requestors to determine readiness.

Worked collaboratively with fellow board members to determine best use of limited funding.

Actively negotiated a solution to resolve a funding deadlock, ensuring that all parties received some funding.

Coaching and Review

Leveraged research and communication skills gained during law school to provide coaching and mentoring for several PhD candidates during preparation of their doctoral dissertations. Over time frames which ranged from two weeks to several months, spent evening and weekend time mentoring rewrites and revisions. Efforts ensured the flow of information was streamlined and complex ideas were unpackaged to remove assumptions and expose the underlying knowledge. Coaching ranged from small suggestions to example rework in order to provide the candidate with alternative presentations. Helped with the experimental design for one candidate where reaction time in a simulated crisis was being measured to determine the impact of new technology. As a non-subject matter expert, coached the candidate to ensure the material and presentation were approachable by a non-expert.
