MINI PROJECT:
TITLE: Fatigue Crack Growth Behaviour Of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy At Ambient Temperature
ORGANIZATION: Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory
PROJECT DESCRIPTION :
The project is to determine fatigue crack growth rate of Ti 6Al 4V using fatigue
crack growth rate testing machine. The machine used in this experiment is of Biss company. The sample
of Ti 6Al 4V is polished using polishing papers manually. Then lines are marked on the sample with some
measurement using vernier height guage. The sample is then fixed to the fatigue crack growth rate testing
machine and it is precracked .The sample starts actual cracking and breaks. Then sem fractograph at low
k region showing crystallographic mode of fracture, mill annealed microstructure of TI 6AL 4V, sem
fractograph at intermediate k region showing striated mode of fracture are taken .

MAJOR PROJECT:
TITLE: Determination of steady and transient state temperature distribution on a two
dimensional body using CFD.
ORGANIZATION: Defence Research and Development Laboratory.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION : Computational Fluid Dynamics is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses
numerical methods and algorithms to solve and analyze problems which involve fluid flow and heat
transfer. In the present work, a 2D stainless steel plate of 12 mm (X direction) 12 mm (Y direction)
0.5 mm (Z direction) has been taken for analysis. The plate is subjected to the temperature of 400, 500,
300 & 200 K in 4 sides respectively. Steady and transient state 2 D heat conduction equations are
discretized into simple algebraic equation taking care for the X and Y directions. Initially, this geometry
has been discretized into 3 3 (along X & Y direction) grid points (4 unknown points). 4 unknown
temperatures are calculated manually for number of iterations until the results are converged. The effect
of initial conditions (assumptions) and boundary conditions on the results are studied. Later, the geometry
has been divided into 6x3 (10 unknown points), 3x6 (10 unknown points), and 6x6 (25 unknown points),
12x12 (121 unknown points) grid points. Since numbers of unknowns are more, calculation of temperature
values becomes difficult manually. For this purpose, programs have been written in “Fortran” language to
solve these equations in order to get the unknown values of temperature. The results are compared for
the same points to find out the grid sensitivity of the results. Transient heat conduction of the discretised
equations are solved for the boundary temperature of 400, 500, 300 and 200 K in 4 sides. Distributions of
transient temperature are calculated with time. Results of both steady and transient temperature are
presented in graphical and data form in details.
